I purchased a 2nd hand lens this week which I received yesterday. An EF 28-105 F3.5-4.5 USM. Filled with excitement last night I cranked it on my 600D, took 2 images and then bang "er01 communication error, clean contacts blah blah"
Of course after doing this, pic, pic, pic, "er 01".
My heart sank. Googled the error appeared terminal. Got up this morning and tried the lens again, ok at F3.5, F10 er 01. Searched again and bingo....
Hope this helps to anyone who has suffered this and I know many have.

Remove battery and memory card.
Turn camera on for 1 min (yes no battery)
Replace the above.
In settings clear all camera settings and clear all custom settings.
Thats it. All above with problematic lens attached.
Went out this afternoon, bingo not 1 error.

Sorry if this is a well know solution.

I've had this lens for many years, since it was first released in fact, and it's still one of my favourites. I've not had any problems on any camera body with it.
I'm glad you solved your problem.
