Anyone out there know of a really good insurance cover for camera equipment? I have taken some out with a flyer that comes with Practical Photography. I needed it in a hurry for a trip but once I had read the details of the policy it really does not offer that great a cover. Things like basically you can not leave it in your car even in the boot as if they get through the back seats to the boot it is not covered. The boot has to be really ripped open and you to have proof of that for it to be covered and just a whole bunch of things following that general order. Any help or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
Try Glover & Howe Ltd, 1 Culver Walk, Colchester, Essex CO1 1XJ. Tel: 01206 814502. They specialise in camera and photographic equpiment insurance.
Just let them know that you've been recommended by ePHOTOzine (could mention my name), they are ePHOTOzine's preffered insurance provider.
Let me know how you get on.

I just did a search on the internet and found these people: E&L. I think they are the same people who stick junk mail in every photo mag around.
For my equipment which is only worth around 2750, the above quote is 90 a year, whereas E&L is only 58. However, the excess is 7.5% with a MINIMUM of 150 and no max, whereas your quote above has a MAXIMUM excess of 150.
Pay your money and take your choice.
We endorse the Glover & Howe because it's the company that has provided all the UK camera club members (such as Canon EOS, Minolta club, and Pentax User) with good service over the last decade or so. The bloke who looks after things is also a photographer so understands our needs.
Pete, I've been a user on here since I saw you at Focus in 2001 (was a beta user) and I am still finding stuff I didn't know was here - just found the Directories.
2 questions:
1. what does the "yes" and "no" mean after the names of the camera repairers.
2. why is there only 1 insurance company listed and why is it NOT the one you recommend here ?
Hi Brian
Glad you've found another area. There are probably loads more undiscovered nuggets too!
We started all the directories off ages ago and all have a public upload option so we kind of hoped the manufacturers, service providers, clubs etc would come and add their details. We have so much on that these are lower down on our priority list. I guess you're right I ought to add the insurance company.
The yes is that they do mail order. A heading might be nice! Thanks for the feedback
Hi Guys
Having read E&L's small print in the past, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. They don't provide a good level of cover and have get-out clauses galore. They don't cover theft from a vehicle - Glove and Howe do, provided it's in a locked boot and out of sight.
E&L target those who take out insurance with little or no market research. People who don't read the small print to see if the cover they have is appropriate. Companies who feel the need to bombard us with such prolific advertising are rarely good value for money.
I've been with Glover and Howe for some years. They do have a no-claim discount, and give a discount to subscribers of EOS Magazine.
Give them a call.
Jo
Jo thanks for your comments. The same discounts apply to ePHOTOzine readers and Pentax User readers. We have a form that we can supply to anyone who sends a SAE to ePHOTOzine PO Box 197 Worksop S80 1NA. We will soon have one that can be downloaded online.
I had to make a claim on my home contents insurance yesterday (my daughter smashed some glass in the china cabinet, the little monster) and while I was waiting in the inevitable queue I saw that I had an "away from home" cover. I checked with the insurance company and found that it did cover my camera equipment up to 3.5K and there was no excess and no problems about it being in car unsupervised.
So, before you shell out more money, have a check see if your home insurance covers your kit.
Hi, just back on line after moving & saw your question. I have never had reason to claim so have no info on that, but I am insured through Photoguard, their policy seems to be thorough & there are various leavals depending on use eg pro or amature, UK/Euro/World, & their rates seemed about the best (I was on a very tight budget at the time) I cuold find. You can find them @ WWW.PHOTOGUARD.CO.UK & they can give cover on line if you pay by card, if you do quote po1107477.
specialist camera insurance has one extra benefit - liability cover, even for amateur use. Plus some home contents insurance only cover for a certain amount of gear. (My home contents doesn't provide enough cover, so additional insurance became a need.)
I use Glover & Howe, purchased through ephotozine, and they are very good to deal with, though, touch wood, I've not had to make a claim. I get liability cover which is nice for when I'm asked to do a wedding.
E&L, from what I've learned in other threads on this site, are a company to avoid.
