Are you using a tripod? I ask because your bird shots are at about 1/200 when you should be aiming at 1/400 or faster unless your technique is excellent. Also remember the actual focus point is slightly larger than the square you see in the vf and with the dipper so small in the frame it could have picked up the edge of the step.

Hmmm glad it's me actually Tongue, must take a fence post with me, but bloke at work selling a monopod for 25, think I'll but it, but must thank everyone for all your advice, Pete

I have started using my monopod a lot with that same lens - if it helps the Manfrotto 234 head with quick release plate is really useful to tilt the camera up/down.
