Canon 17-40L and infrared

Has anyone else tried the Canon 17-40L lens with an infrared body ?

I bought the lens as it is well reviewed for not suffering from hot-spots (which ca be quite noticeable on my Sigma 17-70/OS)

The problem I have is that the (auto)focus is terrible on my IR 10D body, all the other lenses I've tried are fairly good for focus with IR, some are slightly soft, but the 17-40 is miles out, and unusable until about f/8-f/11, I've tried using the AF and then adjusting the focus slightly afterwards by hand, but this is very hit-and-miss ..

I've tried the lens on my (normal/unmodified) 5D, and there doesn't seem to be any AF problem (though I'm not sure that it is quite as sharp as I'd expect - I'm going to do some more focus testing).
