The Mk II version can produce 48-meg 8-bit files for stock photography (for example) without interpolation - but only just about.

The Mk III will give a bit more headroom. With the other features it certainly looks a worthwhile improvement - i.e. not like the Canon 20D -> 30D "upgrade".

Isn't the colour depth now 14bit as opposed to 12bit on this? That should make a huge difference. Hopefully the extra pixels won't affect the noise handling.

Quote: Actually the pixel jump will make very little difference.

I suspect you may be correct Keith.
A 5MP jump sounds alot, but when you start off with 16MP, it is not so great. From my estimations, it is about the same increase the move from 6MP to 8MP (about 25%) - and I remember not being able to spot the difference in 8MP and 6MP images (of the same sensor size).

I can see the advert.

1DS MKII used by little old lady afraid of the rain on bank holidays only. Never droped down hillside or into river.

After last week, I suspect I may be advertising soon as well:
5D, never been soaked by sea water on regular basis, still in full working order (honest!), and suspiciously clean!

For Sale: Canon 1Ds. Been in North Sea three times and several rivers inbetween. Survived two falls onto Italian Marble and more than a few years rollling around boot of car in an Asda carrier bag.
