Quote: Probably the precursor to a fast full frame body, is one way of interpreting the inclusion of an internal t/c, strange indeed, the extender will need to be good.
Should be a good as the new MK3 stand alone version - maybe even better if they tailor the design for the new lens.
precursor to a fast full frame body? Maybe, but it's a very usefull feature to have no matter what body you mount it on.
As I understand, the Nikon version, has been one of the bigger reasons why a number of pros moved from Canon to Nikon a few yeas ago - so maybe Canon are just trying extra hard to trump Nikon?
Depending on its price and weight I wonder if this lens might replace the 300mm f2.8 IS L's position as the "walkaround" wildlife lens that many I know use it for. I'm certainly excited (70-200mm + 200-400mm sounds like a very nice combo!) though the price I agree will easily be pushing £7+ on release.
Sadly its also only a development notice so it might be a year or more before it actually gets its release notice - time to save for us mortals, but still a long while to wait still.
Quote: £5-6k is very optimistic. Maybe £5-6k after a year or two but at launch £7K+ IMO. Bear in mind the new 500L II is £9500 at launch and the 300 f2.8II £7500.
I was thinking that as well, probably closer to £8-10k at launch, which they say is scheduled for 2011, but that probably means late 2012 before it is available in the UK.
Matt, I think the recent 70-300 is effectively the 100-400 replacement.
