I have the d50 , istDs , e500 and 350d at work and have tested them against each other from the same position in doors within seconds of each other. The camera that gave the most REALISTIC picture was the pentax istDs. closely followed by the Nikon D50. All were used in Auto mode. The pentax is also the lightest and has a very large range of lenses new and used available for it. So why are all the threads realted to canon vs nikon , there are more in the market you know.
Lens choice and the results you get from RAW processed files. Plus do people want realistic pictures? ![]()
To be honest I have come to the conclusion that there are only small differences, like buying a mainstream car. None are disasters, but one or two may have features you like.
It's best not to worry and just accept that Canon is the logical choice
.
How do I get a velvia plug-in for my D50? Will I need insurance?
There may be an exception but I don't think there is a bad DSLR out there. It depends if you have any brand loyalty and also what features you like.I went for the Sigma SD10 purely because of the image quality and also I couldn't afford a 1DSmk2 ![]()
Phil.
There are Velvia plug-ins for photoshop, (search the forums there were a few options in there) but personaly I prefer to use a RAW converter and set up curves etc.
To be honest what you need to think of is what is the colour response I want and work from there. Starting off with a Canon on Cloudy WB is a simple starting point.
The Problem for Pentax is that they were relitively late to the market, and do not have a 'critical advantage' in any particular area.
In terms of marketing:
Canon have the lead in Sensor technology
Minalta were very late to the party, but have their anti shake.
Olympus have the 4/3 system (you can debate if this is an advantage or not, but it at leasts sets them apart)
Sigma have the Fevron chip.
Nikon does not really have a technologcal advantage, but they do have a very strong heritage.
So, what does Pentax have to set themselves appart?

I've used Pentax for over 10 years and I use them because of ease of use.
For what I paid for the istD I have a very strong, yet compact and light, easy to use camera.
Backwards compatability is another reason.
WYSISYG viewfinder (I don't bother with the screen) is another bonus..
Magnification? 1.5x, like Nikon, but unlike Canon which has 1.6x - 1x
They're all so good now that the main factor is the photographer. So you just pick the system that suits your needs at the price you can afford.
Another factor to take into account might be the viability of the manufacturer in the long term. I think we can rely on Nikon and Canon still making digital SLRs for the foreseeable future - or till they're superseded, if that happens. But there are a few question marks about the rest I'd say. KM and Olympus have posted huge losses this year and are downsizing, with KM pulling out of the compact digital market. There is big over-capacity. Will Pentax survive? Will there be a shakeout in the market over the next few years? No idea.
Sorry, I think you miss-understand me guys/gals
I was not suggesting that Pentax are in anyway bad - it just that *from a marketing point of view* there does not seem much that makes the Pentax camers stand out from the other camear's in the marketplace.
The question was 'why is every thread about canon vs nikon - I was suggesting a reason...
Mattw
KM totally underestimated the speed at which the SLR market went digital.
Back 'in the film days' (so to speak) KM seemed to be doing rather well at the 'beginner' end of the market - certainly their camers bacame a very common sight.
How many of their users switched to a Canon 300D/350D or a Nikon D70 instead of waiting for the KM D5?
If the D7 and D5 appeared a year earlir, then KM could be a really big player right now - after all their anti-shake is a great selling point.
