Canon 500mm lens question

I am in the very fortunate position of having just bought one of the fast diminishing stock of 500mm lenses. There is a bit in the manual which I don't understand.

Perhaps someone could help.

Under 'Focus preset' it says

'While turning the playback ring to the left or right, press the shutter button completely'

In a sidebar on the right hand side of the page it says-

'When turning the playback ring, keep your finger away from the shutter button.'

these two statements seem contradictory. I'm probably being dim. Could someone please help.

Canon never did have the best English translations.

Hopefully someone with experience of that lens will be able to help you.

Thanks Mike.

That's exactly how I thought it worked, and it seemed to work but I just didn't understand what the manual was trying to tell me. I think it has something to do with the exposure. I must read it again more carefully.
