    Hi

I am looking to update my camera to the 5d mark iii. Does anyone know if the Canon 1.4 converter works with autofocus with this model with the Canon 500mm ef f4 lens? I know that it didnt work with the 5d mark ii. I have read in the past the Af only works with the 1d series.

Yes it will - it brings the lens to f5.6 which is in the range where AF will work on the 5D. It should also work with the 5D2 as well - it is the 2x tc that takes it to f8 which is out of range for 5D but in range for 1D.

The AF definitely does not work with the 5d2. It may only not work with the 100-400mm lens I was using though.

    cheers

F4 lens with a 1.4x converter definitely works on 5D2.
Canon 100-400 is not a F4 lens though, it is an f4.5-5.6

Yes the converter will work but only in manual focus mode. Yes I know that the 100-400 is not f4, I have recently updated to the 500mm which is f4. The question is will the autofocus work with the 5d3 the the 500mm lens?

That is the frustrating thing about Canon extenders - they communicate the f stop to the camera body. So if you are using the 500f4 it knows the lens plus 1.4tc turns the lens into f5.6 and it communicates this to the body so after referring to its little database the camera agrees to autofocus. If the tc detects you are using the 100-400 at 400mm, it tells the camera that the f5.6 is now f8 so the camera gets stroppy and rejects the request.
Third-party tcs do not communicate the info to the body, so the body blithely tries to autofocus with the 100-400 at 400mm - the only thing that really happens is that it hunts for the correct focus. In good light with good contrast on the focus point it will get there but it is hit and miss.

So, you meant that you know 1.4 x on 500mm F4, autofocus didn't work on 5D2???

There is no reason why AF won't work on that combination on 5D2.
There is no reason why AF won't work on that combination on 5D3 either.

A Canon 1.4X extender on a Canon 500mm f4 will auto focus on ANY Canon DSLR, whether that be a 5D, a 5D MkII, a 5D MkIII, etc, etc. etc.

i had same problem with 5d mark iii and 400 mm f/5.6 lens and 2x converter -- wont autofocus. but then i turned on the video feature to see image in LCS screen, hoping it would help with manual focus. thing is it allowed autofocus to work. not servo, but it did do a fixed focus just fine. so is this the work around for all lens?? this was news to me. thanks,

    dom

    500mm f4 WILL work on your camera with 1.4 & 2x converter.
The 400mm f5.6 will work with a 1.4x converter in MARCH when canon gives you the NEW Firmware. You Lucky Ruggers.
Why can't they do that for the 7D???

5d3 + EF500mm + 1.4x (any brand) will AF but not 2x tc.... since Canon will announce new firmware which allows AF at f/8 and the 2x tc will work
