I have got a Canon 300mm f4 L is lens which I use very occasionally on my 1D mk iv body. I am thinking of selling it and getting the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L II. Now I know the lens gets rave reviews but how does it perform with a 1.4 TC attached?(i.e. as a 280mm f4). How would that combo compare to the 300mm f4 prime as far as IQ and focus speed is concerned? My thinking behind this is that I could use the 70-200 for sports (which I am trying to get into as a supplement to my wildlife photography) and still use it for the odd bit of wildlife with the 1.4 TC attached when my 500mm f4 is too long. Would really like advice from anyone who has made this change or who uses the 70-200 with a 1.4 TC

very well indeed and the 2x works as well too.
one of canons best lenses, i have had many great images with both the 1.4 and 2x converters on this lens.
taken with the 2x converter on
I used to have the original 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens and - sold it to get the MII. With the original I'd use the 1.4 without worries, but hardly ever used the 2*TC (I think I used it maybe 3 times). With the MII I'm happy to have the 2*TC bolted onto it at any point I want.
The quality you get is about equal to that of the 100-400mm - so both benfit from closing down a little to f7.1/8. That said the only thing that the 100-400mm has a tiny edge with is AF speed - the rest of the features are pretty much equal (the 100-400mm has a tiny bit of an edge optically, but after editing this is pretty much undetectable in difference).
I use a 70-200mm IS f2.8 Mk II for sports photography using both a 1.4x and 2x converters Mk III versions. For fast paced action I have found the 1.4x to be superb... the 2x is also good but AF lags a little and you really need a bright day to capture fast action at high shutter speeds.
The lens is a great all rounder...so no faults from me. I have just also acquired a 300mm f2.8 IS prime... this also superbly matches with both the 1.4x and 2x converters. Its still early days for me with the 300, but so far the results have been pretty good.
Good luck if you decide to go the 70-200mm f2.8 route.... I don't think you will be dissapointed
Thanks everyone. I wouldn't envisage using a 2x converter so as long as the 1.4x gives the same IQ as the 300mm and focus speed isn't worse then I think I will go for it.
