If you just want a portrait lens it is a bit long, but it can be used,
A fantastic lens, but you will want something shorter too.
I use it now and again for portraits with my 1ds and it's fine. The 70 is fine for full frame as 85mm is usually what people quote as a good portrait lens.
I'd suggest getting it, but also getting a wider lens which doesn't distort the subject like the 50mm f1.8 which is great (only about £75), and so when you need to get a bit wider you can do. (btw if you didn't know...anything under 50mm starts to distort the subject).

70-200mm on a full-frame sensor for portraits??
Perfect.
Ideal focal length for portraiture on full-frame is 85mm. f2.8 is a bonus unless buying FFL 85mm...
EDIT: STILL trying to type faster!
)
quick answer to your question is YES
i wouldn't bother with the 24-105
Depends on the type of portraiture your looking at doing. If its lifestyle portraits out on location then it's a good focal range to have. There are many top pros who only use this lens and nothing else during their sessions.
If you're looking at working in a studio then something shorter may be more appropriate.
If the 70-200 is the lens for you but you want to save a few pennies then why not consider the Sigma?

Ideal for portraits. There are many examples on this site of portraits taken with this lens, such as This Recent Shot
Suggest you do a filtered search on portraits and check out what other ones have been taken using this lens. The proof, as they say, is in the eating....
I do lots of location portraiture for newspapers etc.. and find this lens extremely useful. The only thing I will say is that you may find it a bit long indoors. It's great for outdoor stuff but if yoou're indoors (as you so often are this time of year), then a canon 24-70L is a cracking sister lens and between the two you are well set up for portraiture.
As has been said - don't bother with the 24 - 105, the opticas aren't bad but they can't tounch the 24-70 or the 70-200.
I find the comments 'don't touch the 24-105' a little strong.
It is not a bad lens and it certainly isn't crap, not as good as some other in the L series range, but certainly not bad.
It makes a very good walk about lens and many a tog would be perfectly happy with it.

The 24-105 is a superb lens. I did some people photos with it in the last week and use it frequently on my 5D. Folk who say this lens is rubbish have been spending too much time reading the Fred Miranda/DPReview forums!
The 24-70 f/2.8 may be better, but it's heavier, more expensive and has a narrower focal length range. The 70-200 is a fab lens, but point that at someone and they are more likley to be put off by the 'big' lens than a more compact example.
A prime lens will always out-perform a zoom, it will certainly out-perform a mid-range zoom due to the simpler optics and you'll get a bigger maximum aperture to throw the background nicely out of focus.
