The 7D is a very good camera though I was disappointed to begin with as noise seemed poor in comparison with the 5DII and 5D. Using L lenses dramatically improved the image quality over the 15-85 efs.
Things have improved over time as I have come to know the camera and also I have stopped worrying so much about noise levels if I need to go above 400 iso. I use a 70-200L on the 7D and picking the right subjects helps.
As above, I find the prints do not exhibit the level of noise that a monitor does. Using Lightroom to reduce noise levels works very well.
If you want very low noise levels then the 7D is not the camera to choose.
I should add that I find using a 1.4M1 converter on the 70-200L (f4 is) degrades the image on both the 5DII as well as the 7D and would suspect the 2x would not help matters on the 7D.
