Hi guys, would appreciate some help and advice. I currently have a Nikon D80 with three lenses but desperately want to change to a Canon and don't want to buy anymore kit for my Nikon.
I intend to put my Nikon and lenses on ebay and was hoping you could advise me on which Canon to buy? Ideally I would love the 5D MII but can't afford it!! Which camera body do you suggest that's not overly expensive but can buy decent lenses for - I would much rather spend money on the quality of the lenses if you know what I mean!
Thanks
Skip xx
If you invest in, say, a 450D then you will be able to buy lenses that are also compatible with the 5D, avoiding the need for wholesale replacement of lenses should you choose to upgrade. Be careful though because there are some lenses that you can buy for the 450 that will not be compatible with the 5 and others, like the Sigma 10-20, that work very well on the 450 but will be difficult to use with the 5.

Whats your problem with Nikon.....? ? ?
If your not happy with the images it takes, Chances are there is nothing wrong with the camera......![]()
Its the photographer that takes the pictures, The camera merely does as its told.....![]()
Changing brands will not produce any better images.
We use Canon & Nikon cameras side by side, There is nothing to seperate the image quality produced by either brand.

I don’t know why you would want to change and I’m a Canon user. Both makes are great in my opinion and have their own strengths but overall image quality is down to you much more than any camera. Get rid of the D80 by all means, it’s a bit plastic after all but then so are the Canons in that price range. Keep the lenses and get a D300s or second hand D300 if you can’t afford it. Image quality is not going to be much better than your D80 but it will feel a whole lot nicer in your hand. Same applies with Canon, if you want a camera to feel good and solid you have to go for EOS50D or EOS 7D and up, unless you step up to full frame though the image quality is not really going to get a lot better than the D80 though.
In that case the EOS 550D represents amazing value for money in terms of pure image quality. Its image quality is as good as the EOS 7D which is arguably the best semi pro cropped sensor camera on the market currently.
I would not bother looking at the EOS 50D as it’s bit long in the tooth and noisy as hell above iso1600. Its well built but totally outclassed by the EOS 7D that it seems time to discontinue it, which is likely to happen very soon. If you can't stretch to the EOS 5D mk2 then the EOS 7D is what I would recommend, failing this the EOS 550D. For the EOS 7D build quality and features are top notch, better than the 5Dmk2. The only thing it lacks is the full frame sensor and ultra low noise. That said it’s totally useable up to ISO3200. It will however be very demanding on glass, even more so than the EOS 5D mk2 due to the very densely packed sensor.
On the Lens front one of the Lenses Canon launched with it is the EF-S 15-85 IS and this has been optimised to deliver the resolution and contrast demanded by such a high density sensor. It’s built reasonably well but not in the same class as the L series lenses. To make the most of the 7D and 550D sensors a few choice and not to pricey primes are worth considering, in particular the EF 85mm F1.8 is super sharp, the EF 50mm F1.4 is nearly as good as this too. All round lenses to look at are the 24-105 F-4L IS, pricey but pretty sharp across the whole range, the EF 28-105 F3.5-4.5 is another hidden gem and can be had second hand for about £100. The EF 28-135 IS lens is also pretty good for the money but both a bit long on a cropped frame sensor. For more wide angle work the EF 17-40 F4L is a good lens and for 2/3 of the price the EF-S 17-85 IS lens is also a reasonable performer for the money.
Hope this helps, Ben
I have to say having the 40d that I think the 50d at the current price of about £600 is pretty good value for money.
