As quite a few of us are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Canon's new EOS-20D, launched today, I thought I would start a thread specifically on this topic, rather than comments being scattered around the forum.

I have spoken this morning with the supplier with whom I have made a deposit (CameraDepot). The bad news is that retailers are initially being limited to 2% of their order. In the case of CameraDepot this means only 2 cameras will be received and allocated.

CameraDepot are hoping for further deliveries before the end of the month but have no firm news on that. They have promised to keep everyone fully informed by email.

The good news? If I think of any I'll let you know!! :-(

CB, calm down, you're worse than an expectant father pacing up and down! Wink When they have it, you'll get it. Could be a nice Christmas present. Wink

    Yes, but which Christmas, Frank?

The launch allocation sounds worse than that of the 10D when it was launched...

I have just ordered my 20D through ephotozine's shop - Warehouse Express. They say they have about 60 people on their waiting list.

I have ordered a body with the 18-55mm kit lens. They seemed to indicated that Canon might package them in one box - if that is the case, people who ordered the kit will receive theirs earlier than those who ordered body only. This confirms what I heard yesterday at Park Cameras who said the kit should be available early next week with shipments of the body only taking about ten days.

We'll have to wait and see.

Well presumably Warehouse Express will get just one camera in then! (On the basis of the 2% allocation).

Even Jessops will only get 20 nationwide (1000 ordered) - for a waiting list of 500!

User manual anyone. At least you'll be well prepared when you get the camera in a couple of months.

Many thanks for that, Jon. I have downloaded and will print it off.

As usual we have to go to Canon's N. American websites for the latest stuff. Canon UK's site is always hopelessly out of date.

Shows which markets Canon thinks are important I guess....

Just a thought on supplies. I imagine that some people would have ordered from more than one source. If so, some might get supplied elsewhere and drop off the list.

I would start looking further afield if I were after a 20D. the 1D-II is still in very short supply but in Belgium, dealers have them on the shelves.

I was told in the case of the 1D-II that Canon Japan treat the Euro zone as one big country and distribute to each 'state' equally therefore countries with lower demand (i.e. Belgium in the case of the 1D-II) are overstocked compared to the UK.

Mind you a cheaper and less specialist camera like the 20D is likely to be in high demand unifoirmly across Europe so there may well not be the same possibilities as there is with the 1D-II.

As they say.. if it's worth having, it's worth waiting for and I would have thought Carabosse could hang on a bit longer - it's taken him years to take the plunge as it is! Wink

I reckon Canon have loads ready and are just playing the market a little, keeping the buzz going.
Surely this is the reason why 10D's have been in such short supply the past few months because they have been pumping 20D's off the production line!
Well heres me hoping I aint placed an order yet! waiting to see if Photokina brings the elusive 3d.
    Chris.

What would the 3D bring you or rather what are you wanting from it that isn't already available?

There has been much internet forum waffling about a "3D" (mostly died down now after the 20D emerged). At the moment there is but a hair's breath between the 20D and the 1D II. Only the 1D II's bodywork and 8fps (as opposed to 5fps) is what you pay 3 times the price of a 20D for! 1D II is still a 'crop cam'.

Where would a 3D fit in?

But I think Chris is spot on about Canon playing the market. They have the ability to make cameras by the zillion.

Taken me years, Barrie? Hardly!! I only went digital 2 years ago after using a 35mm SLR for 16 years. I think I have got my timing right actually. The 20D is just the ticket and a nice price too. Smile

Nothing the 20D is all I need and more, just lots of people on the 20D lists will all of a sudden need the 3D (if it appears)therefore giving me a 1000 20D in plentyfull supply (one can hope)
I really would like to see a full test on a production model aswell before commiting my eos 30e to the bottom of my bag only to come out now and then loaded with Velvia!

A 3D, if it ever appears, will probably be the 1D Mk III - i.e. a renaming of the line like 10D/20D.
