Looking at possible cameras to buy and this one seems a pretty good one in the price range I am looking at - please let me know good and bad points or any better alternatives? Thanks

I'm not sure how prices will pan out, but the 350D has just been announced. The spec sounds good, and better than the 300D. Could be worth your while having a look and waiting to see what the prices are like when they hit the streets.
Details are (currently) the sixth item down in the ePz News link.

Prices are falling through the floor on the 300D AND the D70 (surprisingly). Not that I am recommending them but was in Jessops yesterday and they had both cameras at 649.99 inc. lens' and in the case of the 300D, the bolt-on battery pack grip, CF card and some other stuff. In the same way the 300D is a 'cut-down' 10D, the new 350D is a cut-down 20D.

For the price, there aren't any bad points. If you want something that can withstand the pouring rain and that can shoot 8 frames in a single second then you need to look at it's more expensive brothers.

    Good points

It's an SLR which makes it a joy to use compared to your standard digicam.

Excellent picture quality, images are silky smooth, free from noise and other artefacts.

Good control system / menu system. Nice range of shooting modes and other options.

Part of Canon's brilliant EOS system ensuring that you can upgrade your kit later without having to sell everything and start again.

Compatible with a massive range of lenses from Canon, Sigma, Tokina, Tamron etc

If you buy one, you really won't regret it.

Worth looking at the Nikon D70, or, if you are not in too much of a hurry, see what the forthcoming D50 is like.

The new Canon 350D looks like it will wipe out all the opposition in the 'entry-level DSLR' market. Worth waiting to see what shop and online prices are like.

Its solved my problem of wanting something with low noise but not being able to afford a 20D. I'm waiting for the 350D. Looks perfect for me, especially as I have small hands!!!

Just need to find a film scanner now

The one bad thing i will say about my 300D is the transfer time... Its ok, nothing hugely bad but i think its USB 1.1 or it certainly feels like it!

i shoot almost all of my still life images using DSLR remote pro and so every image i take gets trnasferred and saved on my laptop, its a bit of a pain when your waiting for an image to go over... Of coourse using the preview function means only the images i really want get saved. Apart from that i can't really knock the 300D!!

350D is USB2 which sorts that problem!

Think I'd invest in a card reader Ed, don't ask me the technicalities of how the thing works, but I know I would'nt be without mine! As it makes transfering files a cinch and hellishly fast in comparison to a camera!

Yep - very happy with mine - it depends whethr you want to utilise all that an 8 mega pixel camera will offer.

I'm dead chuffed and won't be changing for some time to come!

Oh, and the card reader is a must - cheap and very quick to use.

The 300D is a great camera, I used mine for around a year before upgradding to a 20D last month, the kit lens is not the best but if you know how you can get sharp images from the lens, But I would probaby recomend one of the sigma lenses over the 18-55mm.

Jessops are now doing the camera 479.00 body only and Jessops are not normally that cheap, in the next few months the 300D will be very cheap in around 2 months time you should be able to pick one up for around 300 on Ebay once the 350D is on sale.

i love my 300d. there are five things that could be improved:

1 - the built in flash is not power adjustable, so i never use it

2 - it is not very durable, so i have to treat it like a new born baby

3 - my friend tony has a nikon...and he has this great focus feature on it where you choose a focus point in your camera, you point, you press a button to focus and the focus is then locked there, until you press the button again!! (i really miss that feature)

4 - and when i want to be really demanding, i'd love it if there were a feature where you could set the camera to shoot continuously on a timer, every - say 2 - 5 seconds.

5 - the buffer fills up quickly, but that's just because i've been spoiled by my other friend's canon 10d.

my favourite features of the 300d:

    - the remote control, because it finds the focus after you've pressed the button. i take lots of self-portraits.

    - the quality of 6meg pics

    - its fairly quick response time, i don't miss a shot because of camera lag. i still miss a shot, but not because my camera is too busy trying to decide where to send the picture...

Can't agree with that, it's a lot tougher than it looks. I've dropped mine onto tarmac with a hefty lens attached and got away with just a scratch.

The 300D will do that. Once you have achieved focus lock, just keep the shutter button half depressed and reframe the shot before pressing fully.

the nikon will keep it locked without having to keep my hand on it. plus, i've noticed that sometimes the 300d refocusses even though i have my finger on the button.
