Quote: Go for the one that you prefer to hold. Seriously - they're both good enough for your needs and if both fit the budget the criteria should be related to which camera you prefer to use.
Really can't improve upon that. I would just toss a coin. But if one feels better in your hands, then that is slightly more scientific than "heads or tails".
Recent magazine comparisons between the Nikon D3100 and the Canon 1100D tend to favour the Nikon but the opposite might apply one rung up the ladder. Whatever you choose stick with it - despite the inevitable truism that, whichever marque you choose today will have been leapfrogged by the other in 6 months and the status quo restored after another 6 months.
Yes both good cameras. I have a 550D and that's because it was the camera I had enough spare cash for while I waited for the insurance payout on every bit of my Nikon gear stolen. The D5100 hadn't been released, so the Canon was easily superior to the Nikon equivalent at the time.
Ironically that then dictated I bought the 5DII as opposed to a D700. If the newer Nikon was around at the time I would probably still been a Nikonian. Both good choices in any case.
If it doesn't feel 'right' in your hands you will not use it as often as you should and you will kick youorself for making the wrong choice.
Go into a camera shop and play with them both.
Don't just pick them up and hold them to your eye ...... play with the buttons and see how they feel and how easy they are to find with your eye to the viewfinder.
Then go home and think about what you want to do with the camera ............... and go back to the shop and have another play.
THEN choose.
