Just a warning to anyone thinking of purchasing the 5D MK II.

I have been using the 5D MK II for under a year, and today I experienced the apparently rare Error 30. The error message states to turn the camera off and on or to re-insert the battery. However, this does not resolve the issue. I am able to shoot one or two exposures and then the error message appears again.

I have been reading online forums, which conclude the error is a shutter problem. This seems to be the same problem I encountered with my 450D, which displayed Error 99. I had to send the model back to Canon for repair, which is probably all that can be done with the 5D too.

Although the issue is supposedly rare, there are many people complaining of this error (most of which, reported it to have happened soon after purchase). I was wondering if anyone else has also experienced this annoyance?

I am not sure if mine is still under warranty, does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to repair/replace the shutter? I know it won't be cheap

    Thanks

    Phil

I would expect under £250, its a mechanical thing so you can expect a regular number of units to fail per year till you start to approach a given number of actuations when the failure rate will rise rapidly.

If under a year old then you should be In warrentee period, When i spoke to Canon the the other week they would honour it for a few weeks over that period, the quote I recieved recently was 224 pounds for a service which is the minimum Charge and then Parts,In my case the repair was classed as uneconomical due to corrosion so was replaced under insurence.

insure your camera and equipment, there are specialised insurers out there that deal with photography.
I use a local insurance firm and to insure £6500.00 worth of photography equipment and cameras they charge me £140.00 a year.
Personally i think it's peace of mind just in case your very expensive camera decides to give up the ghost so to speak.

have alook at This Thread and This
Basically a camera such as a 5D would be expected to last more than a year without a problem.

Its just the basic problem as usual that people only report on faults , so whatever problem you look up on google you will find others with the same its obvious , I have had my 2 5dmk2s for years now and shoot 100,000+ shots a year and nothing has failed at all , I am not likely to go putting forum posts all over the place to say my camera is working ?? tho maybe we should Smile

You can expect most 5D to last more than 100,000 photographs without issue, but you should also expect failure as it goes past that value. A portion of the population will fail earlier, and another portion will go on far longer.

I have just found the warranty, and it is still in date.

Does anyone know if I can insist that Canon replace my camera body, instead of simply repairing it? I don't want to wait weeks for a them to service the camera

Shutter replacement in my camera was under a week, camera to dealer Sunday, back in my hands Thursday. As for new Body, that is an unreasonable request, sorry. If you are in CPS you could try for a free rental camera.

I Believe that new replacement is normally in the first 14 days, As strawman said exspect a week, lehmans in stoke who are authorised Canon agents promise in a week when I sent mine in.
