    Hi everyone,

Has anybody read a decent review of this camera yet? I am seriously considering getting one to go travelling with later this year, but would like to hear if it has overcome the problems of the Sony F828.

    Any feedback appreciated.

    Matt

If you don't get any luck on ePz it may be worth browsing DP Review's Canon forum HERE

You will see that some Pro-1 owners are sharing their experience.

I think that some of the others may be better but you are starting to bang your head against the laws of physics. Craming more pixels into a given sensor size results in less light per pixel equals more noise. Adding this to a large zoom range and you are starting to push Chromatic Aberation and lens resolution issues as you need to be able to resolve a lot of very fine detail at the sensor to use 8mp.

I read a review somewhere that the Canon is better, but cannot remember where. Given where you work have you not got an inside line?

On the Sony Talk Forum, some fans of the make are demanding the F828 be fitted with the 5Mp sensor as in the F717!! That way they will have the excellent picture-taking capability of the F717 and the new features, e.g. a zoom that goes down to 28mm, of the F828.

As Strawman indicates, you cram more pixels onto a given size of sensor at your peril!

The review HERE is worth a read if you have not already seen it.

    Thanks for that,
Carabosse, I'll keep and eye out on the DP forum.
John, I run a shop on eBay selling Canon EOS but I do not work for Canon so unfortunately I only have access to the same info as anyone else.

If anybody else hears anything about the Pro 1 i'd be grateful to hear.

Matt, I think it is better in some ways to read a range of reviews by different, and independent, reviewers.

When some people buy a piece of equipment it is all to easy to convince themselves that it is wonderful when it may be only average. Because if it isn't that good, it calls into question their judgement and care in buying the thing in the first place!! So you can end up with a skewed view of the product.

Oh well, but given where you do work, my eldest is getting into photography. Do you sell any of the early Canon DSLR's such as the D30 and if so how much do they go for.

Or alternativley I think there was an all in one 3mop Canon with a 10x zoom. Do you sell any of those?

Hope you do not mind me asking you work questions .

    John,

I only really deal in Canon EOS film. I'll be moving into digital soon, but for the moment you're best to look else where.

I will be keeping a firm eye out for reviews of the Pro 1. I really like the look of it, but I came across a review earlier which was not reporting good results at high ISO's. Purple fringing was also again a big problem.

A real shame really given everything else about the camera, but i think i'll try and get my hands on one soon and see for myself.

    Matt

PS. I remember reading somewhere that Sony make the CCD sensors for the Canon's. Could it be that this is why the Canon may be coming out with similar (if not as bad) problems as the F828, or is this just me talking c**p?

    Cheers,Matt.

    Matt,
Canon use their own chip in the Pro 1. The other 8 MP digicams all use the Sony chip I think. Reichmann over at Luminous Landscape is in the middle of testing several of the cameras (the Sony he owns, Olympus, Minolta and Canon, don't know about any more). He has already said that at least one of them p****s over the Sony F828.

There is now a review of the Pro-1 on DC Resource HERE

    Interesting quote at the end:

"Thus far, I've only reviewed two 8MP cameras: this one, and the Sony DSC-F828. I give the edge to the Pro1 in most areas, most importantly image quality and manual controls. The F828 does get points for a faster lens, superior AF system, and nicer movie mode. It's also a hefty camera to carry around, compared to the relatively compact Pro1."

But worryingly for potential Pro-1 users the reviewer says:

"For those expecting the Pro1 to cure the problems of the Sony DSC-F828, you'll be disappointed -- as purple fringing and noise are still apparent (though not as bad). The Pro1 takes nice, sharp, colorful pictures, though expect some noise in flat areas and shadows, and purple around some edges. I was certainly shocked to see vignetting in three or four pictures -- and this is with the famous "L" lens."

    He concludes:

"one thing's for sure: 8 Megapixel cameras have more noise and purple fringing than lower resolution cameras -- and you'll have to get used to it, or learn to love Photoshop."
