Not condoning is not quite the same as Pro-whaling. But to be neutral is to side with the more powerful. Let's hope canon review their position. In the meantime it wont stop me buying canon products in a another pro'whaling country.

So the question is, if Canon are in Conservation Partnership with WWF, are they a) obliged to adopt identical position statements of WWF or b) obliged to at least offer position statements of their own on the major issues addressed by WWF.

After having read the WWF page about their Conservation Partnership with Canon, I agree the promotion of their brand on the back of conservation seems hypocritical given this, though I agree with happyo that using words like 'support shooting wales' and 'pro-waling' is not quite the same as refusing to take any position on the matter.

The list of other conservation partners of WWF - I don't know whether to feel pleased or despondant.

I suspect Canon have a tricky tightrope to tread, as between the WWF and the Japanese government.

A Japanese friend once indicated to me that whaling is seen, by some, in Japan almost as a "human rights" issue (he didn't say anything about whales' rights! Wink)

So I am not surprised Canon are a bit ambiguous.

Actually, I do agree about my title choice, but I didn't think that "Canon decide to take neutral stance in whaling debates for the time being" would really encourage people to offer their opinions. Wink
I think it's a really interesting issue, and while i would be happier not seeing whales hunted, I am aware that the strongest debates come from countries like the UK wherein whaling has not formed such a keystone of cultural heritage or agriculture. Thanks for the input.

Hi David...you chose a damn good subject that has been mainly overlooked......
If Koreans etc breed dogs to eat then so be it..we breed sheep etc for the same purpose

Cats and the Chinese..don't like it but if it is part of their culture then so be it

Catching whales when they are being driven to extinction...NO WAY

We, as humans, have different relationships/attitudes to animals that we we view as companions, to work for us, to eat, or endangered and/or charismatic.

And now I've totally lost the point of what I was going to say.

At least they are not as bad as Nikon who make all their camera straps out of Panda Skin. Wink

Well, I think we should all follow that link at the bottom of the page David linked to and send Canon's CEO that e-mail. I just sent one - after making a few linguistic corrections. Wink
