I think the clue is the use of the word " Replacement " .....Grin

In all probability that means Non - Genuine, As in not made by Canon etc etc......Smile

The third party items can vary considerably in both Quality & Price.... Some are Ok-ish, Some are not worth a light.

Guess you have to buy one to find out.....Sad

The ones that Meike produce (sold under various names) are very good. I haveone for the D300s and it has been sturdy and reliable. Others I've looked at look pretty rubbish.

The problem with third party equipment is that it not always fully compatible. Flashguns can screw camera electronics, lenses may not be fully functional etc. My rules is 'stay with the branded equipment and you wont be dissapointed' . Colin

The original canon battery died two years before the compatible battery I bought at the same time.

So I should be happy with the performance of my canon ef 18-55 standard lens then?

    Redsnappa,

Its a balance. I said " third party equipment is that it not always fully compatible" but sometimes it is. Also, you have chosen the Canon bottom of the range lens, however I'd be happier with that than I would with a third party bottom of the range lens. A classic example is that some Sigma lenses are not fully functional with branded camera bodies.

On balance I think its best to stay with the brands. Where I am coming from is that you pay £1000 or more for a good camera then you fiddle and fart around saving a couple of quid on risky third party equipment. That doesn't make sense to me. Colin

because a lto of people have scrimped and saved to get the main equipment for their new found hobby, to then find the lenses as expensive as the body.. Not all can afford it all at once but they would still like to enjoy the hobby.

Without these "compatible" manufacturers we would be reliant on Canon not stopping production to force us to a new body.
When they chip the batteries we are tied to their prices and the amount of time they choose to manufacture them.
Give me a ubiquitous AA battery every time or even a lithium Iron rechargeable AA battery.

I wouldn't argue with that. If all else fails you go into any shop and buy new AA's. Which is what is good about the Canon 550/580's
