I have watched this video http://www.photographymonthly.com/Vi...ographing-Cars and am a little confused regarding the exposure when he gets to the walk around section with the off camera flash.

Just so I understand is the tog setting the camera to bulb and manually triggering the flash to light the car ? Whilst I can see how this might work if the surroundings are dark e.g. night time how would you calculate an exposure in the situation shown here where there are lights in the car park.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've watched the vid a couple of times and maybe missed something important

it looks as though as you say he has set the camera to a bulb setting and then is lighting to taste through experience. It's similar to a painting with light technique so it would need a lot of experimentation. As he is a pro my guess is that through experience he has a fair idea of how to get the results he wants.

if it the video i am thinking of.... (too lazy to watch the vid Tongue ) then he says at the end somewhere that he walks round the car using the flash, then has about 50 layers in photoshop choosing all the bits of the car that he likes the lighting on and blends them all together.

As far as camera settings go... long exposure or bulb. Smile

Yep that's the one - just seemed a bit hit and miss as a technique for a pro

seems to work though ( i have used it a couple of times) means i only need one light if i have to move quick at a show etc and keeps the weight of gear down to carry round with you.

This image was done using this technique. One thing I would say is that it takes a lot more flashes than you expect to get a decent amount of light on the subject.

    Hiya

Just thought I would clear somethings up Smile

The shot is done on Bulb and its all about reflection, I like the highlights the off camera flash gives - yes it is tailor made light painting

, the tutorial was for people that dont necessarily have access to lighting andl was aimed at Amateurs and enthusiasts alike ,

    Thanks for the comments

    regards
