After some deliberation I ordered myself a DP2 to compliment my DP1, I had been looking at the Olympus E-P1 also. I found a cheap way of purchasing a DP2 which is approximately half the price of the Olympus kit I was looking at!
Pixxass are offering a rebate scheme, where in return for a working camera (not a point and shoot though) they would give you 250 euros off the price. The offer is HERE for anyone interested. I duly ordered the camera and got the bill, posted an old Pentax P30 for exchange. Within a week I had a new bill for 250 euros less. I transferred the money to them and received the camera.
Pixxass are German, they answered all my emails in English and displayed exceptional customer service, even helping me out with a problem.
The full price added up to
£7 postage of old camera,
£357 for new camera including postage (UPS), VAT, and exchange charges. The guarantee is european so no worries there.
£13 for a viewfinder (Helios multi finder from ebay)
Grand total of £377. Could be anywhere between £529 and £599 + viewfinder here! The Olympus kit is £749.
The price wasn't the only reason for the purchase, as I stated I already have a DP1, so I'm already aware of its limitations but even more so of its excellent image quality. I also had a look at the Olympus, I found that it didn't fit in my usual pockets, was a lot heavier, has no way of implementing a manual hyperfocus distance (big no no for me), and haven't been as impressed with the files from it.
There was an interesting quote from a very recent competitors review site whilst testing the E-P1
Quote: Looking at the astonishing amount of sharp, clean detail captured by the DP2's Foveon sensor (which needs no anti alias filter) and no-compromise fixed lens, it still surprises me that this technology remains very much in the fringes of the camera industry. Even with more than twice as many pixels the E-P1 struggles to match the detail captured by the DP2.
They gave the Olympus 9 out of ten for image quality. ![]()
