I've noticed that a lot of members are already using the Canon 300D. I'm about to order this camera and would be glad of any tips as to the cheapest place to buy. I'm looking for a deal which will include lens, a decent sized memory card and rechargable batteries. I've already done considerable searching on the internet, but I'm interested to see if there is any source that I've missed.

I found T4 good and they will match INTERNET pricing on the bundle. You should get a re-chargeable battery and charger in the 300D kit. Try the Sigma lenses , I have found them to be good, usually they come at a better price than the Canon equivalents.

I'm in the same boat Eric (as I can't be @r5ed waiting for Minolta); are you considering buying from abroad (via Ebay or whatever) or are you definately sticking to the UK.

    Where is T4, John?

In Wiltshire try www.t4cameras.co.uk for their web site. I found the people in the Cirencester branch helpful and patient.

Cheapest shop I know of is Ace Cameras - 810 for lens kit.

Jessops will price match if Ace are out of stock.

Have you considered an ebay deal - harrisons lens kit approx 600

See this link harrisons on ebay

I was about to say it is not a good idea to buy from abroad on Ebay as you will risk import duties VAT etc on top of your bid price.... but I have bought from Harrisons before, just a battery mind you, but they were very helpful and extremely professional.

I bought my EOS300d lens kit on internet from QED for 789.00. However on checking out the site for you just now they do not appear to have any in stock at the moment. They have a very good service and I can well-recommend them.
Kelkoo are very good at finding good deals too and you can compare prices at a number of shops at the same time.

I would like to point out to jonjeds that Harrison's is a US company, the winning bid was 650 and that import duty and VAT at 17.5% could be paid if the package was opened by customs.

You're right David but I've seen them go for about 600 - the idea with ebay is to watch and pick the right time. The VAT is almost a dead cert but it is still a cheap deal.

I have imported stuff from the US both through ebay and other means with no problem at all.

According to an article in a finance section of a Sunday paper two weeks ago, there is duty to be paid. It varies according to the type of camera between if my memory serves me correctly 5% and 20%. What band the 300D comes under, I am not sure. I have also imported small items from Australia, the US and Hong Kong without problems, but in each case they were Jiffy bag size and less than 30. I would not like to take a chance with a camera in a large package getting through customs. If you are hit by customs, you could end up with a camara that at best is not cheaper than a UK one and has no UK guarantee. Obviously, if the price is low enough, then it is worth it. Incidentally I paid 784 including postage for my 300D through DigiFocus which were on the Amazon site.

PS I bought the 300D kit for the above price.

If you buy from the USA you also have to consider that plug on charger etc will be an American fit etc etc...just a thought.Smile

    Eric,

In my opinion the cheapest place to get a 300D kit at the moment is jd-onlineshop on eBay.

They are an Australian registered user, however the item is a 300D (not Rebel) shipped from the UK so there is no risk of imports or tax. With postage it totals up at 686 which is pretty damn good i think.

Picking up on David's point i'm pretty sure there is no import duty on any digital cameras, unless this has changed recently?

I think canon(eos) you will find there is import duty on digital cameras from the US at the moment. There may not be from other countries.
