Hi apologies if i am duplicating, thought I'd posted this yesterday but can't see it any where!

I have recently upgraded to CS3 & am experiencing problems with colour when converting RAW images, pretty new to shooting & processing RAW. In bridge the colours are vivid for both CR2 & JPEG of same image, when using RAW4.2 the colours esp reds became faded when I single clicked on cr2 file in bridge (& stayed like that!) & when opened in raw converter, RAW 4.3 only fades colours when opened in raw converter. All images shot in sRGB, I have also played around with RGB settings in photoshop pretty sure they're all set to sRGB. I have also opened CR2 files in Capture one, when set to adobe RGB colours vivid, if in RAW RGB faded.

Any tips would be much appreciated, many thanks Karen x (aka Vera)

Ok..I'll start and then some of the more experienced on here can correct ....

Your camera should be set to AdobeRGB.

In Bridge> Edit > creative suite colour settings > Pro photo. Then for PS raw converter, at the bottom of the page, between 'save image and 'open image' click on the colour space info. I have mine set to

    Space: Pro photoRGB
    Depth: 16 bit
    Size 3872 by 2592 (10MP)
    Res: 300...

Also in CS3> Edit > colour settings..

    Working space:
    RGB : Pro photo RGB
    CMYK: us. Web Coated (SWOP)v2
    Gray: Dot gain 20%
    Spot: Dot gain 20%

    Colour management Policies:
    RGB; Preserve embeded profiles
    CMYK: Preserve embeded profiles
    Gray: Preserve embebded profiles

A tick in Ask when openeing and Missing profiles.

    Conversion options:
    Engine: Adobe (ACE)
    Intent: Relative colorimetric
    Tick in both boxes.

No ticks in the next two.

Remeber , when you have processed your pic and have resized for the net , you will need to go to Edit> convert to profile.

    Source space: Prophoto
    Destination space: sRGB IEC1966-21
    Conversion options:
    Adobe ACE
    Relative colorimetric
Tick in Use black point Compensation.

Hope that isof some use to you..

Many thanks Cathy, will bear this in mind for the future! Unfortunately I have a whole load of images already shot in sRGB that I need to process, still trying to work out why if all my colour management settings in camera, photoshop & RAW are set to sRGB that the reds fade out when opened in raw converter though vivid in bridge. I haven't got a 'creative suite colour settings 'option under edit in bridge either. All the other settings are the same except I had used sRGB. thanks again Karenx

    Try Ctrol+Shift + K in Bridge.

For a raw file, the tagged profile has little effect on what you can do with the image. You are working with all of the data captured by your sensor. sRGB is one of the most limited colour spaces. The default colour space in Adobe Camera Raw is Pro Photo. This is a wider gamut colour space, but your monitor won't be able to display all of the colours in your file. It's only when you do the conversion of your raw files to TIFF, that there will be data loss.

Back to your original question - I think the effects you are seeing are due to changing colour spaces. It's essential that you calibrate your monitor if you haven't already done so as this is critical to making accurate changes to your images.

The previews in Bridge are just that, what you see when you open the file in Camera Raw is the real image data.

Thanks for advice. Would you recommend that i convert images to prophotoRGB (or Adobe RGB) in Camera RAW & photoshop workspace even though images were shot in sRGB? Then convert back to sRGB for use on web or external printing? They will be mainly be printed at home on Canon pixma iP8500 & used for web.
