I've been searching the next for the last hour or so reading reviews on compact cameras, to a point where i'm just crossed eyed now!!
I need to advice my father which camera to buy around £130 ish. About 7 megapixels. As a SLR user if find the compacts cut so many corners and i'm finding it hard to come up with an answer for him.
One of his choices was the Olympus X820 - can't find a review for this anywhere?
can anyone help with recomendations ???

Perhaps the X280 doesn't exist - did he mean the FE-280?

No. I have the Jessops mag infront of me and there is a pic of X820? very strange.

(Just read back my question, please excuse my spelling mistakes, never checked it before sending!)

Ah so it's the 820 rather than the 280!
Very often reviewers don't bother to review budget digicams so I'm not too surprised. They are all much of a muchness. Smile

That's not helpful to people who don't have hundreds to spend on toys!!
Not sure i'm going to have an answer for him. It's hard to settle on a lower price camera, when your use to using one with all the nice bits and pieces on. I'm very fond of my Nickon D80. But he just wants a little compact.

I can also vouch for the Sony cybershot, wonderful compact.

    Thanks
    Had looked a Powershot SD1000
completely ruled out the FUJIFILM Finepix Z10fd. They seemed more obsessed with lots of pretty coloured cameras, rather than it working efficiently!

I think that the 820 is equivalent to the FE 280 - see link for the manual - it is for both cameras. Just bought an x820 for my son. Must admit its a bit confusing. http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/manual/zoom/man_fe2...

the low end Canon's do have more OVFs than other makes that's why i would recommend any of those. A good one with give you a lot more than you think relative to an SLR

    Hi Deb,

You've probably chosen by now, but personally I'd try and find the best quality 7 MP or LESS camera. Most reviews I have seen tend to note an increased level of noise above 7 MP - related to the size of the sensor and the procesing required in camera. Also, by dropping to 7 MP or less you may open up more options for less money.

I can agree with you there Adam.
I have an old 4 megapixel compact that has a lot less noise than one I own that is 7 megapixel.
