I may be asking the impossible here, but does anyone know of any compact tripods (6"-8") that would be able to take the weight of a Nikon D700 and a 24-70F2.8 lens? Total weight around 4/4.5kg at a guess.

Had a look at the gorillapod D-SLR Zoom (the strongest one AFAIK) and it can only take up to 3kg, so I doubt it'd be able to hold the camera upright.

Do a search for Leitz or Leica table top tripods. There are quite a few out there.
Not sure if they'd be sturdy enough, but I have seen pictures of sports togs using them to sit their dSLRs on at sporting events ( to get low angle shots of athletes and wotnot ).
They appear to be reasonably priced ( for the most part anyway... )

For example....

..or this one, maybe...

Look at the Manfrotto table top tripod(709B)and extension(259B).Is a little short on weight capacity,2.2 kg but is a good tripod.About 40 quid to buy.
