I have an Olympus E410 and used the 42-150mm lens last weekend at the Southport Airshow. I set up on shutter priority (generally 1/1000) and focus set to C-AF.
Most of the time it coped ok and I got some ok shots but at times it just wouldn't focus on the subject matter. In fact it wouldn't seem to focus at all.
Any ideas why?
PS - The battery was fully charged (not sure if a low battery would affect it or not though).

Possibly outside its minimum/maximum focus range.
I was shooting across the water in Portrush that weekend, and my Tamron 70-300 really struggled to focus, expecially when there were 2 planes crossing - eg the red arrows doing tricks. I also had it on continuous focus. It seemed that the contrast made a difference, that is that if I could clearly distinguish the plane from the sky colour wise, or there were coloured smoke trails, then it was okay, otherwise all you could hear was the motor in the lens hunting! Funnily enough it seemed to do better when I put it to normal focus, but that's possibly more that lens than anything else.
I think the lenses you are both using are at least part of the problem. For CF to work well you need a fast lens with fast responsive AF. Swap that Tamron for a 70-200 f2.8 L, and you would see a dramatic improvement.
Agree with Paul, the 40-150 would be fine for most subjects but it will be hitting its limits here.
Really you would need the 50-200, this will perform better with its f2.8 aperture.
You don`t say what focus point you were using, using the center point only could help as well.

I did, so Mr Roberts got to use the Tamron on his 1D for a while until he really couldn't stand it any more

Hehe just noticed my mistake, should have taken note of the title
Looks like I need to save some pennies for a new lens then.
Thanks for the advice anyhow.

Did the Vulcan show Katy? Turned up at Southport at 5pm. Great old beast.

Not when we were there, we only hung around for a couple of hours, although it may have been there later
