Converting AVI or WMV files into something DVD playable?

Please help! I'm really stuck! I've just made a wmv file in Windows Movie Maker and burned it to DVD, but my DVD player won't accept wmv's. So I've managed to save it again in movie maker as an avi file, but I still don't know if this would work in my DVd player. It says it only takes wma and MP3 files (which I thought were aduio?!) (and JPEGs). Any ideas on how I can get this wretched video to convert to something DVD-playble?

The file format for dvd is mpeg2 if you need to know.

Try finding a free download of a programme called Dr DivX. Great little tool for movie files.
