Had a pm conversation with one ePHOTOzine member today that reminded me to raise the point of groups again.

It seems to me that there's an ePHOTOzine lifespan of a some photographers who join, learn, develop then feel they've outgrown what we offer and move on to try and find an alternative.

Usually there's nothing that offers what we do for that next stage, so they either hang around here disgruntled or put up with a mediocre option elsewhere wishing it was as good as the ePHOTOzine experience they had a few years earlier.

If you fall into this group, or want a boost or want to discuss similar photography genres with like-minded photographers, we have a plan. It's groups.

We do have a long term plan to develop groups into something more robust, but at this stage you can form a group in the members meetings area and start to encourage specific photography activity from within your group.

It's in the embryonic stage and does need organisers to make the groups happen. Basically you set up a group in the meetings area and invite people to it. The group could be about ringflash photography, professional fashion, weddings, lomo photography, Canon EOS 5D users, kingfishers anonymous - basically whatever you have a passion about.

Anyone can join a group and when you upload a photo to the main gallery and tick for it to be part of the group it will also appear in the group gallery so it's easier for the group members to see what new images have been uploaded for that group.

We think it's an excellent way to keep the motivation for photography and specific subjects. It's there to be used...up to you to take advantage.

Currently two groups have been formed...one on night photography and one on critical discussion .

Feel free to join one of these or start a new one, but please only start a group if you are going to commit time and energy to it...and only join one if you are going to contribute.

Sounds like an excellent idea. I don't have any particular specialisms I'm passionate about at the moment, but someone may create the ideal one at some point Smile

Can't decide which direction I want to go with my photography these days so this might be a way of concentrating on one aspect for a while.

In the middle of a house move at the moment but will give it some thought for when I'm settled.

I'm pleased to see the development of this side of epz.
I'm one of those people who wants more from the site & the chance for serious photographic discussion is something that will keep me here.

Just a thought.
Could a group be set up for a geographical area or does it have to relate to photographic technique / style ?

For example, a Sussex group where primarily the "locals" could swop location ideas, tips, current weather, pubs for lunch Smile etc.

This would also help anyone planning to come down this way... you know it is just as nice as Pitlochry / Rowardennan / Wirral Wink

Could also, perhaps, be linked into the photo locations feature.

An HDR group might be interesting, but only if there's enough like-minded people out there to make it worthwhile.

Absolutely...groups can be anything as long as it connects photographers and fires enthusiasm.
Could even be members of a local camera club use this as the meeting ground to share pics and discuss them.

It certainly would

That's they key...if you start a group alone and only one joins it will be very quiet and no doubt die out. I'd think 6 or so would be a good number to keep things ticking along well.

This is a good idea.
Can we have it password protected so only those who are invited to the group can read and see the photos.

I believe the concept is that anyone can join a group, not sure how that will work if Pete's suggestion of Camera Clubs using it as a meeting place is taken up ?

Not with the current system but that could be developed, if it's seen as important, when we build the groups feature in the future. Although I hope most would keep their pics in the open for maximum exposure, and for others to enjoy/learn from, which I know is how many of the better photographers on here have improved.

If for example the local camera club set one up...the emphasis would be that to join you need to be e member of the club...but, like all clubs, I'm sure you welcome new members?

I like this idea of a Geographical Group so I will give it a go and set one up for the counties of West / East Sussex... i.e. Sussex.

Quite a large area from roughly Chichester to Rye along the Coast and inland to Battle / Bodiam / Ashdown Forest / Gatwick Airport / Horsham / Petworth and of course the recently created South Downs National Park.

If it takes off then perhaps it can be split at a later date.

Shall I set an end date, initially, of 6 months from now ?

Whatever you think is best
Just make sure that the group has an idea of what type of images/discussion/commitment is expected in the opening description when you form it.

Here's an interesting point...

I often do "leeds" "arhicteture" shots at "night" using "HDR"

1 shot, 4 possible groups the shot could sit in.

Is that something you have considered - adding 1 shot to many groups?

Just an idea Smile

Another feature for the groups build and not currently considered, but could be added.
