I just went here to order a copy of photoshop CS2 while it's still available and it says it is the 'old' version, i'm not sure what that means, is this just old compared to CS3, or is there an older version of CS2?

Yes, a lot more although it is not an easy program to get to grips with. Many have to resort to one of the many tutorial books while there are handy tutorials on this site.
Elements2 and PSP7 are well dated now.

You could find that PSPX or the latest version will be easier to learn and work with. For every day photography I'm not sure that the latest versions give you very much more than PSP7 though I find it nice to have Warp Mesh which arrived with PSP8. I think you will find that Eke#2 is a lot more freindly than CS2, you could also find that Ele#5 easier to work with since you have started with both. Ele#5 and PSPX would make a good combination with each having tools that the other doesn't, without breaking the bank. But I don't know what your interests are.

I will second that. Plenty of tools including Layers. The problem is nearly all articles and so on assume we all use Photoshop.

Thats exactly the problem Ken, i'm going to have to follow the articles then figure out how to perform the same actions in psp7 instead of photoshop....will have to think if i can justify the expense.

The expense is the dilemma. You will justify it, if you want to, or need to. Smile
The tools are there with PSP although under a different label.
CS2 is a powerful program that uses a fair bit of memory. New versions of software expand on the use of the basic tools often making it easier and smoother, a sort of fine tuning.

Photoshop is the benchmark by which all others aspire to. Those that manipulate their shots beyond the standard corrections will find Photoshop invaluable. It was written for designers
who used photography which is why you find that many photographers that use it only use a fraction of what it is capable of.

justifying it to meself is hard, but if the WIFE ever finds out.....OH MY WORD!!!

If you register a copy of CS2 now, I think you get a free upgrade to CS3..........check the Adobe website.

And you'll need CS3 to run ACR 4.1 which is quietly amazing - as it incorporates some pretty nifty sharpening (including edge masks) and several other cool features....

I've been experimenting this evening and it's good. Very good.
