    Hi guys,

Just been working on a file which I'm quite happy with, but photoshop has "stopped working".

I have been using photoshop for 18 years and I have never had it hang before. don't get me wrong, I've had it bin me out completely several times, but I've never had it just stop working.

The frustrating thing is that I (for once) haven't saved the file up until now. I can see the image, but I've just got the whirly timer going round. I've checked task manager and it says that it is not responding.

My question is if I close down CS5 will there be a tmp file somewhere that I can retrieve, or will I lose it all?

    Any help much appreciated Smile

    Rgds

I wouldn't bet on it Paul. Have you any other programs running you can close down? Does Task Manager show you any processes using a lot of CPU that could be safely shut down?

Hi Barrie, unfortunately not on both counts CPU usage at 1% with only CS5 open Sad

Guess I'll just have to do it all again

It wasn't a large tiff by any chance was it Paul?

Did it all but freeze the whole PC? Then yes I've had that problem, leave it running it will save eventually (can take hours). Then don't use windows explored to find the file, or that also freezes, instead use bridge - rename it to PSD format. I've stopped using tiffs to work on for that reason.

    Hii Nick,

No, the rest of the PC was fine, and it was a RAW file opened from bridge. I couldn't wait any longer, left it for around 40mins then decided I'd reprocess it - took 15mins Smile

    Just posted it actually

I'll be doing lots of mini saves from no on

    Cheers
    Paul

.. LOL well for about a day till you forget about it.

Since I had the problem with a Tiff ( and it was only one file) I've not had a problem. Although Lightroom stops responding after a while if CS5 is open at the same time.

CS5 version of Photoshop is the flakiest version they have ever produced......Sad

Why else did they bring out the 5.5 version so soon, ? ? ? Rather than wait until version 6 was ready.....???

Whatever, For what they charge for this software, You should at least get a " FREE " upgrade to the 5.5 version with all the fixes....Smile

But somehow I don't see that happening, Good luck Wink

I thought so to when I was running it on a 32 bit pc with only 4gb of RAM.
Now I have upgraded to win 7 64bit & 8GB RAM Photoshop CS5 runs faultlessly

Must agree - CS5 has consistently proven to be the most reliable version for me BUT (and it's an important but) it does require a large amount of RAM and a fast processor to get the best out of it and this is mentioned in many places. Unfortunately our demand for "bigger and better" more sophisticated programs comes with a price in terms of processing capability Smile

My laptop with 2gb RAM and 32 bit is so slow I hardly use it. But the PC with 6GB and 64 bit is so quick.

The one problem I had, it may not have been CS5 that was the problem. I layered a tiff straight from photomatix with several originals from Lightroom. It may have been slight incompatibilities between formats, and the unflattened file size was extremely large (I don't flatten until I'm completely satisfied). Now I use PSD for everything in Photoshop (advice from an accredited Photoshop trainer). The only time I save as tiff is for external use (magazines etc).

Sorry Nick, once an image is loaded and you're working away on it - the way the file is formatted on disc (.jpg, .psd, .tif. etc.) is irrelevant until you come to save (at which point you can choose a different one anyway). Photoshop isn't more likely to crash because you're working on a .tif. The only difference you might see is crashes during loading, but not during working.

The problem I had Chris is after I saved the file. When I tried to reopen either in windows explorer or from last opened file the PC all but froze (took over 2 hours to open - and I could do nothing else on the PC). I overcame it by opening in bridge, then saving as PSD on advice from an Adobe credited trainer. I then deleted the Tiff file in bridge. My next problem was when I next entered the recycle bin it took hours, again freezing the PC.

This happened even if PS wasn't open.

Simply navigating to any folder containing the image caused the PC to freeze.

I see what you're saying now Nick, I think that problem you had may have been to do with Photomatrix not "letting go" of the file properly. Personally, I've said on ePz more than once, I prefer .psd and don't see any advantage with .tif (apart from .psd being proprietary)

As a matter of interest, what is your memory usage set at in preferences/performance?

    Available RAM:3255MB
    Let Photoshop Use:1953MB

I thought I had more RAM than that - will update it after the hols. But the problem happened in January - I've not had a problem since. I find CS5 a dream now I use CS5 and save in PSD.I must stress all software on the PC is and always has been genuine.
