I know I am going to get a good battering from all the bearded sandal wearing togs around here, but my opinion is that the Sony A700 is a much better camera than the all singing and dancing Nikon D300 which is just as well as I came into this system and things are looking good so far for the future.

Be one thing to say the A700 is a very good camera, and the future for the system looks good, but to say it's better than another camera, unless you've extensive knowledge about that other camera.

Why'd you think it's "much better"

Well at the end of the day it all boils down to money!
The D300 is overpriced and then it needs special more expensive lenses with image stabilisation to be on par with the A 700 inbuilt IS system.
Also on weight its is a lot heavier lo lug around.....
Its a bit faster on a continuous shoot but how many times does the average tog need that speed?
I could go on, but why bother you lot would never admit to it!

    A700 rules OK Smile

    LOL one more time Smile

The A700 costs less than the D300 true, but then the 40D costs less again, and is that a Pentax voice I hear calling out with an interesting camera costing a whole lot less. Oh and look an E3 owner pointing out a whole range of functions....

So by your comparison the 40D and K10D are much better.

But remember look at lens range and price as well.

What suits one person is not good enough for another. Your camera is good enjoy it, but also accept that others may not view it as the best Smile

    Good night Smile

oooH but I don't own this camera Smile
Having read dozens of reviews I have come to the conclusion and totally on my own that the A700 is much better and like I said in the beginning is my opinion Smile

Yeah I read those reviews too in the Sony Style magazine. J/K Tongue

Go buy one. Hey but don't forget that you'll be buying into a less popular system than Canon or Nikon, you'll not find it as easy to shop for lenses and accessories and you'll likely pay more.

On the plus side, you'll make friends with the other Sony owners. His name's Jabberwok. He may even loan you his mirror lens.

    Nite Luis Smile

    I'm glad you did I didn't!
You will be buying not into a less popular system but into a system that will grow and offer all that other systems offer at a more reasonable price.
The lenses are some of the best optics on the market and of course there is always the third party lenses like Sigma's and Tamron's

Let's face it what is at the heart of A Nikon D300 if not a Sony heart? Smile

Right that was the first upset Nikon owner,, more sandal clad people sure will appear LOL!

Well why dont you all consider that the most popular photo ever on this site was shot using a compact camera!

Its not always the camera but the person behind and the lens and subject matter in front of the camera that play a huge part......not to mention on some ocassions you need that really hard skill to master....LUCK!

Some cameras have annoying charachteristics or useless things added to them, some perform better in other areas and some are just churned out to plug a gap.

However I think Sony are just trying to start a global domination of the electronics market!! Just Kidding

Bryn, no disrespect to the author of that particular photo, but lets face it became popular because it was the first in its genre to appear on EPZ, getting an EC and a POW certainly helped. however some post manipulation had a helping hand so its not all down to the camera or the tog. I could argue that most popular photos here or anywhere are taken by either top notch gear or very experienced togs. very few are by simple compacts or complete novices.

A good camera and a superb lens help no end to achieve a perfect shot, the only thing a camera cant do is compose it for you and choose when you decide to take the shot or where& what. get these four elements right and of course the tog is said to have great skills.
