Hi all, I have the nikon D3100 with the 55-200 lens, I would like to take more close up photos when Im out and was wondering what would be the best type of teleconverter on a budget. I enjoy trying to take pics of birds wildlife etc but enjoy taking pics at rugby matches also. Any suggestions please? Im on a tight budget so a new lens is out of the question.
How fast is the lens? If it is slower than f2.8 at the long end I would definitely recommend going no further than a 1.4x as otherwise you lose too much light.
TCs reduce the quality of the image, so unless the lens is absolutely pin sharp you could end up being disappointed in the results and not using it. A decent TC (something like the Kenko Pro300) will cost you around £100. They get a very good review even in comparison to Nikon's own.
Hope this helps
Ian
What Ian said, PLus you would be much wiser and get much better results, If you traded that 55-200 for a 55-300 or 70-300mm Nikon lens of course....![]()
I can vouch for the 70-300 VR its a great lens for the price, I have heard good things about the 55-300mm too, Couple that with an 18-55mm and your good to go....![]()
Forget using a tc on that lens, the af will slow down to much and not be sharp. As mentioned the 70-300mm non vr would be a better bet and not cost much more than the 1.4 tc.
To use a 1.4tc you really need a f2.8 or f4 lens.

You should be able to get more for the old lens on ebay, rather than trade in at a shop.
Quote: can the difference in price be justified in the quality for the average amateur/beginner?.
Probably not - unless you put a value on getting sharp shots of birds and rugby. Only you can tell.
But I certainly agree that if you are going to spend more money, then put it into glass. Also, I would heartily endorse the recommendation of the 70-300 Nikkor as an excellent budget lens.
