Most people will when they read the heading say replacement BUT what do you say when I tell you the next bit....?
My budget is VERY strict and not much leeway. I want to get the D700 and a Nikon 24-70 but my concern is the replacement will be quite expensive and I would not be able to then purchase the 24-70 and as my current lenses are all what I'd call average, I'd say the lens is very important!
What do you all think?

Hi Peter, Have you factored in selling some of your current kit.....?
By that I mean the cost of your proposed purchase D700 + Nikon 24-70mm total cost, Less what you might reasonably expect to get by selling some of your current gear....!!!
In an ideal world the 24-70mm coupled with a 70-200 ( of some sort ) would be enough lens options for most purposes, Though you may want the odd specialist lens ie: Macro etc.
Its a tough decision, whatever way you go.....
Unless your in a big hurry, The rumour mill has been doing overtime ( Not something I bother with usually ) One rumour is that the D700 may be getting an upgrade, Or even a whole new model to replace it, I would say that the new/upgrade to the D700 has a tough act to follow, Chances are it will have all sorts of toys and video + loadsa pixels, This might only might mind you, Have an effect on the current D700 prices ( Though this is not always the case, Usually wishfull thinking by some ) .....!!!!
However one thing that might be an option is " Decent " used D700 models may be on offer by those who can't resist buying the latest new toys.....
If my prediction runs true, You might find a good low mileage D700 ( Anything under 35,000 actuations would be low in my book ) That could be bought for far less than the new price.....!!!!
Under this possibility, You might get lucky and get your D700 & 24-70mm a whole lot cheaper than you think.....
Whatever, The launch dates via the rumour mill are said to be sometime in August 2011, So not to long to wait and see what happens....!!!
Good luck either way.....
EDIT: If I have got this all wrong and your asking " Do I buy a D700 now or wait until its replacement arrives " Thats a tricky question......!!!!!!!!!
The unknown is the price of the new D700/D800, Its not going to be cheaper thats for sure, How much more expensive is anyones guess, Knowing the current D700 fairly well, I would not hesitate to buy another D700, Irrespective of what mystic options/add ons or other toys are included on the rumoured replacement version, Its that simple......
Sure the D700 has been around for a while now, But its still a superb camera and its replacement will not change that one little bit....
I would wait for the D400 and D4 announcements.
Probably only one more month.
If nothing else there will be more used D700 bodies for sale at that time at a lower price.
I do not expect the D700 replacement for at least one more year.
