I am new to medium format photography. Can you tell me if depth of field for medium format is the same as 35mm lens for lens. ie is depth of field the same for 35mm 50mm lens as for medium format 50mm lens.

To answer your question directly, the 50mm medium format lens has greater depth of field.

The 50mm medium format lens has greater depth of field because it is a wide-angle lens. In medium format the standard lens depends on the size of neg e.g.6x6 has an 80mm lens,6x4.5 has a 75mm lens.d.o.f. is more or less the same as 35mm but practice with the lens at all apertures and judge the results for yourself. Enjoy medium format for it's own merits and try not to compare it too much with 35mm. Both are great in their own way.

For a given angle of view, medium format will always have less depth of field because you are working with a longer focal length lens. If you are comparing identical focal length lenses I'm not so sure. I've just had a quick look through my Mamiya and Minolta and can see little if any differences between 80mm lenses on both at the same aperture. At the end of the day, just use the DoF preview I guess.
