Could anybody tell me (plain english preffered) on DSLRs with a crop factor does the depth of field become greater with the magnification effect, stay the same, or get smaller.

Just curious and could not find an answer to this.

    Thanks.

Technically, it stays the same. DOF is relative to the focal length & aperture used (and size of final image).

That must have been about the shortest and least contentious thread I have ever seen about DOF and crops!!

    Give it time Ian!

I know a college lecturer who is working to prove the DOF changes with the size of the sensor as well as the lens(although I cannot see how it would myself!)

If you have a sensor of zero size then nothing will be in focus and therefore the dof must be zero. In which case there must be a relationship between sensor size and dof!

That should get it going! lol

    Ian

That's right, go and spoil it!!!

DOF has one variable that hasn't been mentioned and that is the circle of confusion - go google if you want a technical description! The COC is different for sensors to film, so basically dof may change between film and digital. This doesn't have anything to do with the crop factor and could be considered to de insignificant.

Ian - don't think you can apply calculus to sensor size . . .

    Joe,
    Its not Trevor is it?

I'll apply calculus to anything to get a good debate going. Grin

There is a good reason for not mentioning it......
