Different Flash Units

Does anyone know how to get the Minolta 5600 hsd flash unit to act as a slave from a Canon speedlight 580 ex the latter being operated off a canon body, I've tried the Minolta on its four channels and still can't get it to fire. The only other way is perhaps to have the two wired together by their pc sockets but the two fittings are different and I suspect not compatible unless anyone can tell me otherwise?

I've tried various settings and had the Minolta on manual at the time, the canon set as master and just test firing but not off the camera I'll try again Brian and thanks for the info.
