can anyone recommend a decent digital SLR camera? i am a big fan of SLRs as i like to be in control of how i take my pictures, and i also like their experimental qualities too.

howeva, i absolutely loathe digital cameras becoz they take rubbish pictures and just basically tend to do their own thing! and controlling aperture and such things on a digital camera is not as easy as it is on an SLR.

but i do appreciate the advantages that digital cameras also have which is why i am after a digital camera which most closely resembles the classic layout and ease of use of an SLR... any recommendations?

I think a lot of that depends on your budget Og. The Canon 300D and Nikon D70 are at the lower end and from the results I have seen on here both are excellent. The Sigma SD-10 has a 3 layer sensor which is supposed to multiply effective resolution as each layer is responsible for a single colour.

Your second paragraph is rather sweeping and I would suggest that you have not tried any of the SLR style models, like the Dimage A1/A2. They offer full control over everything and are a good step up if you either can't afford or don't want an SLR. A D-SLR has its' own problems, if you do a search on sensor cleaning it will take you a week to read all the forum threads there have been.

Maybe if you say what your budget is people could make some recommendations for you.

    hey digi, hello again

by my 2nd paragraph i meant ur normal run of the mill digital camera wher you have to access loads of on-screen menus to adjust settings and the like. howeva i did use a Nikon at college a few times and these took very nice pictures indeed.

my budget, erm... maybe 500 squids? cud stretch to 800 may be...

"I absolutely loathe digital cameras becoz they take rubbish pictures"

Dont get me wrong here but I couldn't disagree more. If you are after a true digital SLR there are a variety to choose from:

    Canon EOS 300D - 650 (750 with kit lens)
    Nikon D70 - 800 (850 with kit lens)
    Canon EOS 10D - 1199 body only
    Nikon D100 - 1000 body only
    Canon EOD 1D (mark 2) - 3400 body only
    Nikon D2h - 2300 body only
    Canon EOD 1Ds - 4700 body only

At the moment the 300D is the best priced digital body. I cant remeber exactly how it works now but canon had a 100 cashback deal on the 300D as well!

I think your best bet if in dought of these digital SLR's is to choose a budget, go into a shop and try one out. I prefer the canon cameras but its all down to personal preference at the end of the day.

    Happy shopping.

I can only base my advice on my own experience, but I have recently purchased a Canon 300D, an I gelled with it immediatley, Im having some good results with it and if you shop around you could well get it (body only) within your 500 quid budget.
Word has it that the Nikon D70 is a nice piece of kit, but this may lead you a touch out of budget.

Og, if your budget is 500 to 800 you need to either go for an SLR style, or a secondhand D-SLR. For your money you would be restricted to the kit lens, which I'm pretty sure you would soon want to supplement with a longer zoom and they don't come cheap.

There are loads of good quality models of prosumer cameras around and for 500 to 800 you could get the latest versions. You will have to pup up with an EVF viewfinder, but if you chose say the Dimage A2 it has a 1mp EVF, which I believe is good enough for easy manual focussing.

    Good luck

ive neva used a digital SLR but hear they r very good. howeva i have used normal digital stills cameras like the ones u may buy from Currys and it these that i feel r rubbish.

do digital SLRs follow follow the same layout as the classic SLR? can aperture and zoom for example be adjusted by hand and via dials rather than thru stupid digital menus?

Yes. There is a menu system but this is more for custom functions etc.

Yes they can Og, but they also can on the SLR style cameras. I think you are talking about the little compact cameras, with few buttons and everything in the menu. The SLR style digital cameras operate in a very similar manner to SLRs. The main differences between SLR and SLR style are:

    - SLRs have a true viewfinder, not EVF

    - SLRs have interchangable lenses, SLR style use a fixed long zoom

    - SLRs perform more quickly

    - SLRs have larger sensors and therefore are less prone to noise.

    - SLRs are a hell of a lot more expensive, bigger and heavier

    Hope this helps

its just that i used to do a lot of darkroom work when i was at art college years back, and i wud like to get back into my photography.

i used to experiment a lot with Kodak Recording Film, always looking to expose more and more grain in my pictures. can digital cameras be as much fun as darkroom experiments???

so is a digital SLR a true SLR in the classic sense?

If you are a big fan of SLR's what's your current set-up? You may find that there is a natural progression and possibility of using existing lenses.

Just about, yes - you just put memory into one and film in the other.

Your best bet is to go and try one out, that way it will be clear in your mind before you spend a handfull of hard earned cash.
