I'm thinking of getting either the Nikkor 17-55 or 24-70 in the near future (undecided about which - currently shooting on DX and the 17-55 is a better match to my style, but wonder if the 24-70 has more longevity - perhaps a future switch to FX....) but my question is whether I would save a decent amount buying such a lens at Focus On Imaging. I've seen decent bargains there before, but not sure if the amount I would save is worth the 'non local' factor.
Opinions anyone?
Once upon a time, fairs and exhibitions were great places for getting bargains, especially on the last day (and the last hour). Unfortunately, although there are still discounts to be found, the real bargains seem to have dried up somewhat.
When I have asked trade stand holders about this at a number of trade fairs and exhibitions, the common answer is that stand space has become much more expensive and has really changed the economics of the situation.
By the way, both the lenses you mention are first class. I used the 17-55mm f/2.8 as the "standard" lens on my D300 for a couple of years. Unfortunately, as you note, it is a DX lens so I had to change it for the 24-70mm f/2.8 when I switched to an FX camera. If I were in your shoes, I would probably opt for the 17-55mm as a secondhand purchase on eBay, in the knowledge that I would get all, or most, of my money back if I later sold it by the same route.
