Hi, im not exactley a beginner but ive only been studying photography for a few years. Im in year 12 of highschool and im in the process of my first visual art studies major. Im taking a series of photos which all require mounting, after discussion with my teacher we established that canvasing my prints would be too expensive and that DIY block mounting would be the best option.
I know how to use mounting spray but i need advice on how to custom make my own blocks to my specific size and shape requirements. can anybody offer some help? or perhaps any other cheap and easy mounting suggestions for custom sized prints?
thanks
Really cheap and easy - go to your local art shop and buy an A1 sheet of mountboard (about £3-£5). Decide the amount you want your border to be. Cut out of the mount board the shape the size of your photo + border on each side (I used a metal ruler and stanley knife for this). Spray mount the photo. That's it.
PS, our local shop often does bulk buy offers on mountboard and discounts for students on anything
Phone KC Arts 01246 824847 ask for Keith and say you know Phil and Dave, he cuts all my Mount boards for next to nothing, i have 20 x 16" cards with 15 x 10 cut outs and a plain board for the backs. im sure he will cut you a pile and send them to you. make sure to say CREAM OR WHITE SIDE FACE. he also has black etc.
dont use spray mount, hang with 2" masking tape on the top edge only to allow movement and expansion particularly on gloss photos. put 2" wide double sided tape (yellow paper cover from Wilkinsons stores £2.90 roll ) applied to the edge of back board, place the back and front boards together and finally trim the edges with a steel rule and model knife
Phil
hey thanks for the help but i kinda need help with block mounting specifically, i actually live in australia so thanks for the number but im not sure how helpful it will be
any other suggestions about constructing blocks?
blockmounting as in on wood? or does it not necessarily need to be wood? i used black foam core board for one of my art projects and used spray adhesive on 20x22" prints and it work really well. i also used perspex for 3 big prints which came out really funky.
Could you maybe use particle board and get the woodwork kids to help you out using a jigsaw to cut it to size? you could still use spray adhesive to attache them (im pretty sure.. its pretty good stuff)
Or you could get canvases from your local $2 shop and stick the photos to them.. they come in heaps of different sizes... but if you want unusual shapes then it wouldnt work.....
whats your concept for your work? maybe you could try some unusual surfaces/objects to attach your images to... prints on transparencies look pretty cool too.. but i guess it depend on what you are trying to achieve. My friend got some landscapes printed on fabric (snap printing do it - not sure if you have that in Aus tho) and then sewed back into the image with different colours cottons.. she ended up getting her work exhibited so i guess the markers liked it!
any way.. just a few ideas ![]()
