Just wondering how people focus their long telephoto shots (say from 300mm onwards): do you use autofocus or manual focus? Do you let it depend on the lens, on the subject being on the move or not, or on other circumstances?

I use 400mm lens often with x1.4 extension for stationary images, always on a tripod and nearly always with manual focusing and remote release.
For subjects moving towards or away with the 400mm lens I tend to use Auto servo, hand held or with a Slik AF200 using camera shutter release for hand-held and remote release on tripod.
For panning shots usually manual with same hand-held or tripod set up as above.
So right or wrong that is how I tend to shoot.

If it works for you, it's bound to be the right way to do it, Mike. Smile

Thanks for your reply, I find it very interesting. I hadn't expected you to say that you used manual focus for panning, for instance. Food for thought.

My panning shots tend to be of swans and ducks flying across and directly in front of me through a fairly narrow arc so subject to camera distance is quite constant. I tend also to use f/8 as my preferred aperture.

    Ah, makes sense, then. Thanks.
