I have recently been embroiled in a "discussion" shall we say with a friend of mine over cameras. He is firmly of the opinion that you need an all singing all dancing SLR and a tonne of expensive equipment in order to take a good photo. I am of the opinion that you should try and get the best you can afford by all means but a "good" photograph depends more on the photographers eye and ability to structure an image than what camera they use. What do you guys think?

    Yes and no.

(BTW, if you do a forum search, you'll find that this has been discussed in several threads already.)

The consensus is usually that a good photographer with a simple camera is more likely to get good results than a bad photographer with a good camera.

Having said that, I must add that having good equipment does help. But good equipment doesn't take good photos all by itself...

Open a can of worms why dont you Emma! Firstly welcome to the madhouse.

No you dont need all singing all dancing SLR etc etc, but you also need a tool that is correct for the job.

For example I shoot mainly high speed action sports, many compact digital cameras arent suitable for this because of the shutter release lag. Whereas a DSLR fires as soon as you press the button.

Simalarly many lesser cameras lack the ability to to adjust all the settings etc that a SLR has and that can also be restrictive.

Having said that there have been some stunning images appear on here that have been taken with compacts.

I would agree with you. You can have the best kit but if you can't see the photo you can't take it. Haveing better lens I guess does help to improve the image but seeing it is the most important I think. Andy

    I hope not!
I think my DSLR is no where near as good as the current ones on the market, it was when I bought it but before that I used an Olympus 6080 and got some good photos with that.

I'm not really hung up on technical specifications etc I prefer to concentrate on getting the photo I set out achieve with what I have.

Have I started something I shouldn't have? Ooh eck!
I would love an slr one day, but I can't afford it right now! I recieved a s6500fd for xmas and thats the poshest camera I've ever owned and I must say I'm quite impressed with it. I've only managed to take a few sample shots with it so far, one of which is in my portfolio (little girl lost) but so far I'm a happy camper and don't see myself upgrading as it were for sometime.

Not really Emma. It is just that some many of us on EPZ have seen people load themselves up with expensive equipment and still take photos which verge on dire.

On that other hand we have also seen great stuff taken on lesser equipment.

We look forward to your efforts....... and welcome to EPZ! Smile

He wants a leica (is that how you spell it?) and was disgusted when I passed over a £200 tripod for a £30 one. My thinking being that at some point I'm going to be in a muddy situation and I don't want to be panicing about ruining it!

Emma, the main thing is that you are happy with what you take and you enjoy taking them Smile

Worry about everything else later on. Upload a few shots for the critique team to have a look at, they are very honest and dont bite (except maybe CB ^^^) lol

I'm sure a monkey with a crappy P+S camera could get a good shot if you left it long enough.

good kit and lots of experience on the other hand make it more likely that you'll get a good shot.

I've seen very poor shots from a Canon 1Ds II on this site.
