This is a bit of a follow on to another subject that is running about picking a photo and doing a critique on it. How about the photo that gains the award, the editor adds his comment to why he picked this photo and if there can be any pointers given to anyone new to photography. This way every one can learn from a good example there may even be some pointers how to improve it (if possible). If you think this is a good idea please add your comments (sorry Ephotozine team this could mean more work for you) PS this site is excellent keep up the good work it's not only us that need encouraging.

I think that would be a good idea and an advantage to all on the site. Nice one Phil.

Pete has already said that he doesn't have the time for this, which is a crying (if understandable) shame, as I would certainly find it a great benefit.

I would like to suggest that Pete picks one of MY images for the award and then I will explain why it is such an excellent choice! :0)

I posted a suggestion following a bit of controversy HERE.

What do people think? Would we find it more helpful to have fewer Editor's Choice photos - but with comment on the reasons for the choice?

I've an idea for starters - if you don't understand why an award was given for a particular photo, why not request that I comment and give my views. The risk here is that the owners of the photos picked may get upset at being singled out by those who don't think they deserved the award, but at least we will get something going.

I think you yourself actually identified a potential problem here Pete!

Better to have a one liner on every pic I would have thought. Also you might find you are being asked to comment on pretty well every pic anyway... somebody within the large membership is going to find a particular choice baffling!

However, since you asked I would find it quite enlightening to have comments on these here (just for example - there are many others!):

How about a tick-box on each pic allowing everyone the option to 'Nominate for Editor's Choice'?
Highest number of nominations to go forward for consideration and final decision down to Pete.
This system could be refined in many ways: daily, weekly, monthly etc.

I think you're right Pete, in that someone may well feel slighted if their pic is singled out for an Editor's Choice Challenge.

Limiting the number of EC's is a possibility, if you were willing to do a line or two on each one to say why it's achieved the award. Otherwise (because time constraints must be a bit of a barrier) I like Ken's idea. You could then assess the top three or top five or whatever, on a weekly basis - or whatever, and maybe if you were the month's winner you'd win an increase in your upload privileges for the next month or something .. Carabosse...comments made on photos you ask for. You may not have noticed but I had already left comments on three of these.

Pete I had noticed your previous comments but in two of the three instances it was a sort of passing observation. The more detailed comments you have given are great and just the type of thing I'm sure a lot of us would find very helpful... I would anyway! Smile

I personally think that since Pete awards the Editor's Choice, there should not be a nomination system. Otherwise it would be a reader's choice! That's where the most viewed images could play their part - back to the hit counter idea...

The 'Nomination System' might accomplish the following:
    1.Introduce an element of 'democracy'
2.Take some pressure away from Pete by reducing the number of pics he is expected to trawl through each day.
3.Avoid instances such as the recent 'Red Arrows' award.
It would not be simply a 'Reader's Choice' situation as Pete would have the final say.
Maybe, with the reduced number of pics this would involve, then Pete could afford the time to give us his views on winning entries.
Alternatively, another solution would be to reduce the 'two per day' upload limit but that has been discussed at some length in previous threads Smile

The most viewed counter is not the same as a "readers choice". I've looked at a few today just to figure out what the hell they were and afterwards wondered what the hell they were doing on here.

I think a simple button to "recommend for readers choice" could be added and if a photo gets more than a certain number, it goes in a new gallery. (can picture digicammad clicking his own button furiously Wink

Regarding the Editors Choice I think Pete has made it abundantly clear that this is a personal choice and that not getting your photo chosen is certainly no reason to throw away the camera or jump under a bus.

The fact that Carabosse picked out a number of images which had some very favourable comments by other readers just goes to show how individual choice differs. It is very telling to go to one particular reader's portfolio who shoots mostly women, and has about 10 pictures chosen.......

    Yes Bri,
I feel we're thinking along the same lines.
    'Most Viewed' in pretty meaningless.
All you need to qualify is a nude or 'cheesecake' shot to get a shedload of views.
