You need the Grants Toolsplugin. Works with Elements 2 and 3, but not 4. Mike

Thanks Terry for asking it and Michael for pointing us in the right direction.

So in summary then, does elements 4 have layer masks? and what does elements 4 have over elements 2? and is it worth upgrading?

Terry from what I've heard 3 is better than 2, and 4 is not better than 3, Adobe have simply plugged some holes which allowed 3rd party effects to used. Nodoubt someone will correct me on that if I'm wrong.

I don't think any of the versions have the layer mask built in, people just download the relevant 3rd party software.

I have two, and was thinking of getting four, but now I'm waiting for five :oD
Although some of the useful plug-ins were found not to be useable in four, alternatives have been developed which are compatible (and should be in five, too, they say), so I think I shall invest in the latest one.

Did that make any sense whatsoever?

Glad I got even the old v.7 of Paint Shop Pro, hear that v.11 is approaching .. that was before Elements was released .. seems it is missing on various important tools, some accessible through plug-ins ...I've never felt the need for a plug-in with PSP though it will handle most PS plug-ins with the latter versions v.8 onwards I think, maybe v.9.

Elements always had "clipping masks" which generally suffice.
Both layer masks and clipping masks have their place, even in Photoshop CS2 Wink

Have a look at my Elements tutorial here:
    http://www.photon.me.uk/PSE/PaintingPSE.htm

And yes, there are plugins available that add layer masks to Elements 2. Check out:
Hidden Elements - I have the Elements 2 book and it was very helpful indeed. Taught me a lot of Photoshop trickery Wink
