Try `Steves Digicams` for a full report on all of them.
I have a Pentax 1stDS that is fine for me, Uses CRV3 or AA batteries easily obtainable in emergencies. Very easy to use and is a nice comfortable size.

And if you want to see what can be achieved using a Pentax check out K's portfolio.

I use a D70 (not that my portfolio does it justice!) and I've found it to be user friendly and reliable and quite capable of satisfying my needs.

Something else I'd recommend would be to go a camera shop and hold each one in your hand. I'd decided on a Canon until I did that, but the Nikon just felt 'right'.

In a Nikon/Canon comparison PP make in their July issue, they say the Canon 350D would be great as an entry level choice.

I use istD - it sits nicely in the hand for me, and produces great quality pictures. As 'dashbox' says above, takes CRV3 or AA batteries (rechargeable or otherwise). Can't compare to the others quality wise, though for me, the D70 didn't sit comfortably in the hand

i would probably go with a Canon or Nikon, they have a lot larger lens range than Pentax,.

but you can use pentax 6x7 lenses on the istD series via an adaptor from Petax, worth a look?

As`the name suggests Id say go for the D70. The build quality knocks the spots off of the Canons, plus the 18-70mm lens usually retails at 300. The D70 comes with an adaptor to hold 3 CRV3 batteries too so you do have back up. 90% of reviews ive seen have reccomended the Nikon over Canon but you cannot go wrong with either to be honest, each to his own, see what you feel most comfortable with.

IMHO there are two main things to consider.

1 - how the camera feels in your hand, if it's comfortable & you have confidence in the build quality 'feel' then you will be able to concentrate on getting the pic. Try to get your hands on them all & have a good 'feel' (ooh err missus!!)

2 - you will be buying into a system, so if you have plans - or suspect you may wish to upgrade in the future, check for availability of good quality lenses & maybe higher spec bodies (in this case, at the present time, this would put Canon & Nikon as the two main choices unless Pentax bring out a higher'pro' spec kit.)

Whatever kit you buy, when used properly they are all capable of producing top quality images, you should not be dissapointed with the technical quality of your results from any of them.

To my mind the difference between these two cameras is in the handling. It can be argued that the canon produce less noise, especialy at ISO100, oops forgot the D70 does not have that.

so what do you want. The D70 is bigger which may be better for you and has a better kit lens, unless you buy the Canon 17-85 which has IS. The Canon has a better lower noise sensor technology and better JPEG processing.

Go away from the bog standard lenses and the Canon lens range may apeal.

To be honest, it depends where you are starting and where you want to go. The D70 is good, but the 20D is better. The 350D is smaller. The 300D costs less than all of them and equals the D70 for image quality but has less features.

Go oan, go oan, go oan, go oan.... get a pentax.

Have had my *ist Ds for 6 months, and it's superb. Takes all my old pentax lenses, you can pick these up quite cheaply. It felt the best, and IMO looked the best of the 3, others being 300d and d70.
But as I read in a mag, there are no real bad slr's out there... it's all done to what you feel is right, for your own needs.

    Hope this helps!!!

PS go oan, you know you want to...

Eh???? That camera's been out for what, 1 year?

Is it not a wee bit premature to be buying into a new system?

my 300d was destroyed by a malicious person with a hammer, and i got it right before i even heard of the 350d (way to piss me off canon), but guess what, i looked more into the nikon, and still didnt go for the d70 or the s version either, i decided to stay canon and jump to the 350d, it may be smaller, but to me thats a good thing, produce less noise w/ less bulk, thats what i liked, and screw the kit lense comparison, who even gets those, just get the body and choose your own lense...

i dont want to dis nikon in this, i just like canon's system better, the 350d in my mind did a lot to make up for the 300d...

if dp review doesnt get too mad, im linking this chart:
    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/page21.asp

thats in the 350 review article.... the ist isnt even there, but you can compare it in the buying guide....

honestly, i just didnt like the olympus system, i really really hate operating their cameras, i mean good results, just annoying to get them, my dad swears by them however....and hes converted from canon...go figure....

to conclude, i like canon over nikon, but i cant tell you much about pentax, i didnt really like it much, but thats because the basic specs werent what i wanted.

4get about all of these cams and buy a nikon d2x (just alittle more in cost) but im sure at 12 mil pixles ur gonna get a super cam ((((dont tell the wife tho)))) ;0) lol
