Why not another Nikon so you share lenses etc?

    Get a D3100 and keep the D200 as a back-up.

I just fancied a change from NIKON. Plus I can't use my lenses with the d 3100 and 5100

I don't get it - why couldn't you use your Nikon lenses with a D5100?

I have a 550D as a backup camera and it's an excellent little thing, but in your position, I wouldn't be buying another marque - it makes no sense. Besides which once you buy either of these cameras (I don't know about the Sony), your D200 will be the backup as it's outclassed on all but build and ergonomics - general IQ, particularly at higher ISOs is appreciably better.

If you have that sort of money to spend it would be daft sticking with kit lenses.

The bottom-end Nikon cameras don't have AF motors in the camera body so can only be used with lenses that have their integral motors. All Nikons work with all modern Nikkor lenses but many togs still have non-G glass. You need to move one rung above the bottom to get a body that will work with all lenses.

Which reminds me, why not get a secondhand D300 (which will work with all lenses) and keep your D200 for back-up. I just happen to have placed a very lightly used D300 on eBay tonight at £499 (it is also in the ePz classifieds). Now there is the perfect solution to your dilemma!

Not sure about that. Canon users always seem to think that the grass is greener on the Nikon side of the fence. (old British proverb).

Very true that's why I read of Nikon users dreaming of quality 70-200 F4 and 400 f5.6 lenses like you get in the ........................

Damm I forgot who made them is it Nikon, no, who is it again ???

Ah - I didn't realise the 5100 didn't have a focus-screw. Still, I wasn't getting the sense the OP had a lot of vintage, quality glass [most of the good modern stuff will have their own silent motors, surely?]

Having owned both a D200 and D300, I'd confirm the latter was a considerable advance on its predecessor, in spite of the cosmetic similarities.

There`s quite a big difference between a CSC and a DSLR do you really know what you want, or is that money simply burning a hole in your pocket.

What Makes you think the Nex3 is amazing, your asking about image quality ?

How about this, and you can use your old lenses.
