Please could someone offer some advice. My Epson 1290 has started to print like the attached no matter what i send to it. I have tried this printer on 2 different computer setups one of which was a fresh installation of Windows XP but it still just prints blocks. Does anyone know what this fault is?

That looks like some kind of board issue, ie it can't interpret the data. It's a very old printer now, I use one for letters etc. Think you'll need to buy a new printer as a repair is going to cost more than it's worth.
Before giving up, try reinstalling the driver CD. It may just do the trick.
I had this once with my old 1290. After some messing with no results I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. I had no further problems although have now moved up to a 2400.
Try a different cable or refresh the parallel port by deleting it
If that doesn't work wait until Epson are open and contact one of their SERVICE CENTRES near you.
Remember, repairs don't always cost the earth unlike a new A3+ printer and cartridges
thnaks for the replies. I have never seen this fault before and it just happened after 8 years of good operation. I have tried a fresh installation of windows XP and it did not work.
dcash29's solution is the better option so far,I had issues with mine just before Christmas took it to my local Epson service centre, 5days later and £35.00 plus vat I have it working in good order again.Good luck.
Just rung a few Epson centers local to me and the cheapest is £60 to look at it. But if it needs parts then they will not replace them as they dont have parts for 1290 - not really helpful at all for a group of service centers
does anyone know if you can press a combination of buttons to get a test print without being connected to a computer for the 1290?
Do you mean something like THIS ?
Scroll and select your printer then scroll down again to view
thanks thats what I wanted!
