Depends on the definition of portrait, if it includes people study butt:

Andrzej Dragan - Brilliant, very Dark but his series on the famous people from history as they would look now is stunning.
Bob Carlos Clarke (Deceased - sorry) - Was ahead of his time, noted for his erotic stuff, but he was far more than that, check out his Marco Pierre White images. (did some pretty good still lifes too).
Joey Lawrence - Very up and coming (only 19 or 20), does a lot of promo stuff for the Twighlight movies, but see his images of African tribes people.
Bill Brandt (Deceased - sorry) - Very innovative, creative use of wide angle lenses for people stidies.
Joe McNally - Great strobe light specialist
Dave Hill - Not really my cup of tea, but flavour of the Month overly sharpened IMHO, very contrasy lighting "style".
Jill Greenberg - Ditto the Dave Hill comments.

If you are doing a project why not look on the images of photographers that are no longer with us too? As they shaped what goes now.

Just a couple of names to add to the list

Snowdon - Always loved his stuff - likes to use natural light

Andy Earl - mostly works for the likes of Q magazine in the rock and pop world - and he's a nice bloke as well !! this is a great image

and check out the early work of Annie Leibovitz ( those 70's pics of the Stones- fantastic!! )

(and sadly no longer with us but Herb Ritts was superb !)

Oops. John Hedgecoe passed away in June. Never mind, Jane Bown is simply brilliant, worth at least two.
