Interesting. I remember all the huff and puff years ago, when actresses were complaining that they shouldn't have a different job title just because of their sex. There was a period when they insisted on being called 'actors', must have all died down again.

Officers, constables, sargeants etc etc

I was given a polite reminder recently when I referred to one as a WPC.
