Ok, so I am fairly new to all this photography stuff but I am lucky enough to have been invited by Neal Shaw (Thanks Neal) to attend a photo shoot with Paul Ward at his studio in Birmingham in September. There will be two models (one of whom is likely to be Melissa).

I understand that many of you will have experience of this already, and, rather than turn up unprepared, I wondered whether or not you would be able to offer any advice as to:

What to take (Apart from Camera, Tripod,Storage).

Whether my not having a flash other than the pop-up one on my camera is going to be a problem.

What to do? Before and during the shoot.

    What NOT to do!!

Etiquette (It's not that I am socially inept but I'd rather ask just in case there are some "unwritten rules" which I am not aware of!)

Hopefully, providing advice in this regard will be useful to others as well.

Would also be interesting to hear from any models on this subject.

    Thanks in advance.

    Andy

Relax, enjoy it, have fun and, most of all, help the model to relax and have fun. Do that and the pictures you'll end up with will be a whole lot better. A relaxed and happy model makes a huge difference to the resulting images.

Also, have you got a model release form sorted out and agreed? I usually send the model a copy before the shoot and it is usually signed at the end.

Best advice I can give though is help the model(s) to relax and have fun.

    Andy

Don't worry yourself - just come along and have fun.

Paul will be sending an itinary out soon which should prepare you a little more with what to expect. You just need your camera, batteries and plenty of cards!!

You have a hot shoe on your camera so the studio flash is not a problem.

The models are very professional and will no doubt have much more of an idea than we have. Paul will of course be on hand to assist as well.

Looking forward to seeing you, Lloyd and the others on the day.

    regards
    Neal

    Thanks Neal,

I am indeed looking forward to it very much!

John has a point (above) about the model release forms. I have some printed out which I use for iStockPhoto. Will these be ok to bring along and ask them to fill in on the day do you think?

I think Paul will have this covered so don't worry.

Johns advise is good about relax and have fun!!

It may be worth having a look at some books / mags and bring them along if you find any poses of interest. Often better to show your model what you want than explain.

    cheers

do you know what you are shooting - glamour / portrait, fashion etc etc, any idea of props, what clothes. If so think up some poses you could try because its embarassing if you turn up with a willing model and have no idea what to shoot or how to start.

Have you got a hot shoe to fit to camera to connect to lights or a laser. ?

With models especially female the rule is DONT TOUCH , discuss with your models what your going to do ask for there input. Keep chatting to them tell them they look gorgeous etc etc - keep them relaxed.

    Most of all enjoy.

Hi Guys - sorry I only just found this post after meeting with Neal.

Andy, it's good to hear your excited about the day - don't worry though.
I'll be sending an email to everyone soon, detailing what to bring and more details of the day and what we'll be doing etc.

Re - model releases - we'll do one allowing you to use the pics for your port etc, but that will not cover selling the images - as it's not very fair on the models bieng as they are working so cheap for this day. I'm sure if you want to try to sell images the models will be happy to work out a deal with you for that.

your hotshoe is fine - we'll be using radio triggers (provided), on the day, but you're welcome to bring your flash too if you have one, just in case.

The day is about learning lighting techniques and working with models - it is NOT a glamour shoot .... so I'm afraid there will be no nudity on the day ... just good, clean fun!!

What to do - relax and enjoy yourself!

What not to do - Worry .... everything will be fine, cool, and dandy ! Wink

Just to let you know the second model is going to be Shelley - (see my most recent editors choise pic)

look forward to seeing you on the day
    regards
    Paul
